Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2014)

A HAND-MADE iridescent vase with a Robert Wynne “Denzien ‘90” engraving to the base. ‘Denizen’ is the glass studio Wynne opened in Manly, Sydney in 1991. Wynne is considered an Australian pioneer of studio art glass and his pieces are represented in Australia and internationally. I’ve seen several of Wynne’s pieces on ebay in America priced at $2000. I have also seen a piece of his earlier work bid up to about $2000 at Shapiros auctions a few years back. The piece on offer in this listing is up there with those as far as skill is concerned.

This piece should have a lot more on it. It exceeds the quality and has more “wow factor” than most Loetz, Tiffany, Charles Lotton and Heaney pieces. Tiffany pieces of this size fetch up to $5000. Lotton pieces around 22cm in height fetch about $2000. Robert Wynne has a proven track record for pushing boundaries and staying fresh. Over the years his work has constantly changed. The work of other artists such as Colin Heaney didn’t change as much. I’ve never seen another of these around and never will. If you dig into Wynne for a bit you’ll see that Wynne was constantly mixing it up. This astounds me in a way. This piece would have caused quite a sensation back in 1990. He could have produced them for 10 years and just kept selling them. But he didn’t and quickly got on with new ideas.

It’s incredible that this would have been one of Wynne’s earliest pieces, made in the lead-up to opening his first gallery. This piece shows a flow and essence that only epitomizes why he has gone on to become one of Australia’s most respected artists but it’s the skill of this artist that astounds me the most.

The patterning is expert with regards to the level of technical and creative skill. Wynne is one of Australia’s best glass artists. This is not just my opinion. Wynne recently won the coveted Kirra Galleries National Illuminating Glass Award with a $15,000 prize attached to it for his piece “Raven’s Clutch”. He was also named in the Valiant Glass’ Top 10 Australian Glass Artists in 2011.

Google, Robert Wynne glass and if you dig a little you’ll see some amazing pieces of work by this talented artist. This hand-made piece of art is certainly one to be passed from one generation to the next. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and our environment. And additionally when you buy hand-made art you’re supporting a dying industry where décor items come from the hands and hearts of artists as opposed to machines.
