An Ercol “Renaissance” steam-bent 2-seater ash timber sofa. This sofa is a 2000 production made in Buckinghamshire UK, by Italian Lucian Ercolani. Ercol was established in 1920 and the construction quality is brilliant. This 100-year-old furniture-making business pride themselves on making high-quality, environmentally-friendly furniture.
The Ercol “Renaissance” Collection was made to be resilient and fit for the purpose- the THICK turned spindles make this furniture exceptionally strong and durable. Simple classic lines with the perfect colour palette for this design, this suite will bring both elegance and COMFORT to your home.
The comfort though is the biggest plus on offer here. Very high back, perfect angles and heaps of plushness, you’ll just melt into this suite at the end of a long day and never want to get back up! Even the removable serpentine seat-base is sprung. Sprung seats are the most-costly option- that’s because they’re the best! Perfect for comfort and so MUCH more durable than regular webbing. Webbing needs replacing after every 15 or so years- sprung seats will last a lifetime but usually more!
The thing I personally love most about this suite is how easy it is to look after. All upholstered sections sit loosely on the frames. The covers are easy to remove for cleaning (return the covers to the cushions whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage). This also means that re-upholstery down the track is the cheapest and easiest. Only the loose cushions need to be taken to someone who can sew- the suite itself can stay with you whilst they’re re-done.
Environmental considerations play a large part in how Ercol source the timber for their pieces. They mainly use HARDWOODS such as ash, elm, beech, oak and walnut. (This is Ash. This light-coloured timber is rarely found in Australia- all Australian timbers are darker than this European timber.) Ercol undertake rigorous diligence procedures to ensure that the timber complies with regulations. Ercol also have their own responsible sourcing timber policy.
The solid hardwood ash frame has been created by steam bending SOLID WOOD to shape a frame that is light, yet incredibly strong and durable. Most furniture in these sorts of shapes are created using thin laminated pieces of timber with a veneer finish- the Ercol way of doing is far superior, and to my knowledge, it’s a process that’s not done in Australia at all these days. This bending process takes longer and is much harder to do because it must be done very slowly and monitored carefully throughout the whole process.
The appeal of investing in Ercol furniture is simple. When a furniture company stays in business over 100 years you know they’re doing a lot right. Here you have irrefutable evidence of the quality you’ll be buying before you shell out a cent. This suite is almost 20 years old already and look at it! True quality is unmistakable. Investing in used QUALITY furniture is one of the best ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill. In fact, it’d be almost impossible to argue it’s not THE best way. This suite retailed new for about AU $10,000- a no-brainer investment for you and the future of our environment.
