THE $1995 LISTING PRICE is for the 6 DINING CHAIRS ONLY. We also have the matching DQF dining table priced SEPARATELY (also listed in our NEWLY LISTED Category). Priority will be given to buyers who have interest in the full dining suite. (The table and 6 arm-chairs for $3400.)
This suite is being sold under CONSIGNMENT from Bundaberg, Queensland. I travelled to Bundaberg to personally work with this furniture. Other DQF furniture from this private household appears on the iNVISeDGE website. Interstate delivery can be arranged. I’d say it’d be around $380 to get all 6 chairs to Sydney.
Background Info and Provenance
A set of 6 VINTAGE dining armchairs made in Murrarie, Brisbane, in 1980 by DQF (Danish Quality Furniture). This was one of the last dining suites DQF ever made before the onslaught of furniture from developing countries hit our market and forced virtually every Australian-furniture company out of business. (To my knowledge DQF lasted until the mid-1980’s before they could no longer compete with the cheap imports flooding in.) 50 cents an hour versus $23+ an hour- it’s obvious these businesses can NOT compete. Do something to encourage local industry, you stupid politicians!
What a stunning suite! This is easily one of the nicest suites we’ve ever had. It’s very special for get a set of 6 armchairs- the armchairs were more expensive to build so they’re virtually never seen as a matching set of 6. This is the first suite like this I’ve ever had in 20 years of trading. I love how these chairs are carved from solid pieces of timber (in this case, New Guinean Rosewood). Virtually all suites in a similar style made in Australia at the time (eg. TH Brown & Sons and Parker) have a timber veneer on the backs. This suite is infinitely better in quality. This suite showcases all of what DQF was. The expert skill of the DQF craftspeople and the creativity shown in this suite needs no more words! (That might be a first for me … I’m speechless- lol!)
Despite 40 years of EVERY DAY use, these chairs are sturdy and SOLID, thanks to TOP-QUALITY workmanship. These chairs are not suitable for people over 130 kgs in weight. Our vendor has recently moved and a couple of their new friends are over 130 kgs which is the only reason they’ve decided to sell this prized suite (after having it 40 years). One of their heavy friends pushed a chair back, it got caught in the groove of their floor tiles and a joint area cracked at a seat corner. This area has been professionally repaired so this chair is now stronger than it ever was. (Read our Condition and Dimensions section for more details.)
These private-sellers still have the original 1981 invoice from DQF. (I love the type-written entries and “old-school” cursive writing on the receipt.) This FULL DINING SUITE cost $2000 in 1980 (a sale-price because my clients were repeat DQF customers- they got various pieces of furniture made for their office as well, which has already been sold). With INFLATION, $2000 is worth about $6400 today. This suite couldn’t even be made in China today for this asking price. You’ll be getting highly-prized ROSEWOOD timber with expert craftsmanship at a fraction of what it could be made for today. NO shady workmanship here- why throw your money into landfill any longer? This suite will retain its value (AT LEAST) while you get to enjoy using it in your home.
The story of DQF is one of inspiration and ingenuity. This immigrant family from Denmark revolutionised the furniture market in Brisbane from the early 1960’s until the early 1980’s. Grit, determination and a genuine love for what they were doing shines through in every DQF piece. The appeal of investing in vintage furniture is simple. When items look like this after 40 years of use you have irrefutable evidence that what you’ll be investing in will last the long-haul. Buying vintage furniture is one of the best ways (the best way?) to INVEST in your home and reduce landfill. This suite will be of service for another 40 years (at least if used with some sense) before being passed onto yet another generation. It’s a win – win – win. At our price, you’re not only investing in something that will retain its value (at least), you’re also reducing your carbon-footprint (by eliminating needless landfill) PLUS you’re supporting iNVISeDGE, a locally-owned, locally-run SMALL business providing meaningful employment opportunities in our community.
