Provenance and Background Info
This is the first timber screen / room divider I’ve ever stocked in iNVISeDGE. I’ve never come across another I’ve ever wanted. This VINTAGE piece was a definite “yes” the second it was presented to me. Usually there are a few umms-and-ahhs as I contemplate whether or not I should take something on. This was an easy and resolute “yes!” It ticks all the boxes but to top it off, I’ve never seen another like it (after 19 years in this business). If I needed a timber screen, I’d buy this myself!
The thing is though I don’t really “buy” anything anymore. Everything I “own” is an investment- a calculated decision about whether or not the item is good for me and the world (the items I own MUST be sustainable, preferably made by hand, preferably of natural materials and they all must have “real (or inherent) value”. Virtually everything I “buy” is second-hand- even most of my clothes are second-hand- I come across amazing things all the time- especially second-hand clothes! Any new clothes I buy these days just fall apart within months- I’m sick of it!) If something is good for you and the world, it automatically has “investment appeal”. Furniture that’s good the world must be well-built. Everything else is “just one step away from landfill.” The vast majority of the furniture on offer these days has been built to end up as landfill sooner rather than later. The quicker it breaks- looks “ratty” or no longer fulfils the function it was built for- the quicker you have to go out and buy more… and the quicker you are sending MORE money to the companies that produce “this stuff”. (I can think of other words to describe it but I will refrain.) Those items are built to keep those businesses flourishing (not you!) The more of this “stuff” you buy, the more money these companies make. They WANT these items NOT to last, they want them to end up as landfill as quickly as possible so you have to go out and buy them again.
This screen on the other hand is TOP of the range- built of SOLID timber- SOLID hardwood slabs. It’s as heavy as hell and best moved by 2 people. Yes- if you’re strong you can move it on your own but it’d be a struggle for most. The other reason I’d have this myself is that it has INHERENT VALUE. The “decoration” on this screen (which is on BOTH sides and is “timeless” and non-descript) was all HAND-CARVED. An extraordinary amount of time, patience, expertise, love, and “life-energy” has gone into creating it. This life-energy has INHERENT VALUE- value that can never be lost. Even if China was to try and produce something like this, it would cost you this asking price to make it … at least- even with paying their workers like slaves. If someone was paid $5 an hour to create this, by the time everyone got paid, including the cost of the HARDWOOD slabs, a retailer in Australia, the tools needed to make it, overseas freight, customs clearance, fumigating for pests, the bubble-wrap and plastic needed to protect it on the trip overseas (which incidentally all ends up as our landfill)- if all these costs were added up, the cost to create something like this would be at least AU$800. The “investment appeal” here is a no-brainer. No country could make this for this price, BUT it’s vintage … where will you find another? I’ve seen nothing else like it.
This was purchased in the early-1990’s SECOND-HAND by the people we bought it from so it’s at least 30 years old. Look at it after 30 years of use (!)- no guessing how long it will evade landfill for. If you look after it, my guess is it will be passed from this generation to the next … and then the next … There are not many furniture pieces on the market these days that could be said for.
This room divider has a stunning, inspiring look, displays solid HONEST construction, has no-brainer investment appeal and practicality to boot (this wouldn’t blow over even in strong wind- it’s just too heavy), … but wait … there’s more! (If you call within the next 30 minutes you’ll receive a free set of steak-knives … joking!) Every time you “invest” in your home through iNVISeDGE you’re supporting a LOCAL business that supports CONSTRUCTIVE LOCAL industry. It’s a win for us, a win for you and a win for our environment. I can’t think of any better way you can invest in your home.
PS. The piece has the same carving on EACH SIDE!
