Background Info and Provenance

A LARGE Italian 1960’s pottery bull (almost 28cm long and very tall as well.) I’m pretty sure this one is done by Alvino Bagni. I’ve seen a couple of his animals with ITALY printed in paint to the underside like this one. I’m not entirely sure but it’s definitely of the callibre of a Bagni piece- it’s certainly Italian and vintage. I think what really works here is the intriguing contrasts at play. The overall shape is stylish and sophisticated- it almost has a Danish-modern feel to it; but the glaze is the sheer opposite. The surface-treatment is almost tribal and archaeological with its earthy tones and rough textured look. This is truly an inspiring piece of art by a very talented artist. I love the contrasts in the colours as well- the deep background colour with the splotches of bright yellow adds some sunniness to the piece.
It’d be a perfect gift for someone under the Taurus star-sign.
The Italy stamp to the underside gives the piece irrefutable history and investment appeal. There’s a Bagni bull with a similar amount of handiwork in it on 1stdibs at the moment for a staggering AU$3887! (See the screenshot provided.) Another Italian bull by Bruno Gambone was recently bid up to AU$1525 on ebay. At my price, this is an obvious investment- I believe it will easily gain value in the near future. (In the right gallery it could be sold for double this right now).
This bull is a unique shape and beautifully made- I’ve never come across another one exactly like it. This piece is a lot rarer than virtually every vintage Italian pottery piece and has at least the same degree of handiwork (but probably more).
The real beauty of owning a vintage HANDcrafted piece like this, is knowing it won’t be in vogue for just a season or even a couple of years before ending up as landfill. This piece will continue to be handed down through the generations gathering more stories as it passes hands. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

This vintage piece is in great condition for its age with no condition flaws to report at all. NO chips, NO repairs, NO cracks from mishandling. It presents extremely well. There is a small degree of roughness to one horn which I believe is NOT damage but part of the creation process. The glaze goes over this horn in the same way it does for the rest of the piece. This is inconsequential and not noticeable- it does not affect the piece at all. The piece has been extremely well looked-after. The ITALY on the underside is missing the letter I. This is simply because the artist didn't judge how much of the underside should be left unglazed to accommodate the stamp. The hole underneath is part of the creation process and is meant to be that way- that part is not damaged at all. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
