Provenance and Background Info
Just stunning! This Chesterfield sofa by HIGH-END Italian manufacturer Poltrona Frau has it all. The duck-egg blue colour on this design is just amazing. The Chesterfield is a widely-known traditional vintage design. Poltrona Frau has added extra detailing and in this colour, this sofa really stands apart. These sofas are normally seen in Oxblood, brown, forest green … any traditional colour you can think of. This is the first time I’ve seen a Chesterfield in a colour like this. It just pops!
But to top it off, the quality is unbelievable- there’s no other word. The leather is beautiful to touch and the best quality, the detailing is just incredible and the frame is so heavy! It’s obvious the second you experience this sofa in the flesh it has been built to last. The investment appeal here is a no-brainer. I’m pretty sure these sell for something like AU $15,000 new (I’ve seen a second-hand one on 1stdibs nudging AU $10,000- see the Screenshots above). Anything under AU $5,000 for this is a very solid investment. If you look after it, I can’t see it losing any value … ever! I’d say it costs Poltrona Frau much more than AU $5k to make them new!
To get this re-upholstered in Australia you’d be looking at paying about AU $4,000 alone! (About $2,200 for specialist labour and about $1,800 for leather of this quality.) Investment appeal gets a resounding tick, as does every other box. The COMFORT is sublime- I think they’ve added duck-down to the seat cushions for extra softness. This is a sofa to nestle comfortably into a curved corner- pure luxury.
Poltrona Frau is little known in Australia, that’s only because their items are so expensive- not much of it has found its way here. This piece exceeds the quality of most B & B Italia, Cassina and Poliform pieces. Poltrona Frau was founded in 1912. By the 1930’s it was already a status symbol. From 1926, Poltrona Frau was appointed supplier of the Italian Royal Family, the Savoia dynasty. And for the next 100 or so years, many grand hotels and residences have been furnished by Poltrona Frau. They use the most advanced technology of the world … their hands!
