Description
SOLD in the first week of being listed for $1795!
NOTE- the table shown in the first 4 photos is one I sold within 2 days of being listed in iNVISeDGE for $1700 way back in 2007.
The table on offer in this listing is better than that one (and is on offer 15 years later after values for all Australian-made furniture has increased SIGNIFICANTLY.). This one is 3 metres long when extended (the Parker one shown with the chairs was 2.67m long). The Parker one was chipboard as well- the table on offer in this listing as NO chipboard in it.
NOTE- The listing price is for the extendable table only. The chairs sold immediately for $450 per chair. If you have any chairs in this design you’d like to SELL get in contact with us as we have a list of potential buyers for this design.
This table is being sold by a regular seller in NORTH LAKES, North Brisbane but can be transported Australia-wide. It would cost ABOUT $400 to get this table to Sydney (to give you an idea of cost for interstate freight).
Provenance and Background Info
(Written in 2022)
This is one of the best dining tables I’ve had for some time. Many people would think this is a Parker dining table. It’s not … it’s WAY better! These vintage Parker tables were nearly always chipboard. This table is NOT! (It’s full timber under teak veneer.) This one also extends to be 3 metres long. (The Parker ones with 2 extension pieces extend to be 2.68m long.) This one also has 2 butterfly extension pieces. The extension pieces for the Parker dining tables were loose and housed under the table (there was no extension mechanism). Like all of this table, the butterfly extensions here are of the highest quality and a joy to use- plus you can choose to employ either one or both extensions- that’s practicality for you!
Why is it that everyone goes Gaga in Australia about Parker furniture? It’s because Parker Furniture is everywhere- everyone knows, everyone has seen it. (Their items from the 1960’s are harder to get but not the tables.) We’ve seen Parker extension tables with the 2 extension leaves priced at $4000 in the upmarket retro shops in Sydney, Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast.
This table comfortably seats 10 when extended (but could squeeze in 12 when extended). Despite its huge size, it boasts an incredibly sleek and refined style inspired by Scandinavian design. So you may be asking, who made this table? To be honest, who knows, who cares? It’s clearly vintage and better than a Parker and priced here to sell immediately (and give our iNVISeDGE buyer a no-brainer investment). I’d say it was custom-made in Australia back in the day (I’ve never seen another in Australia extend to be 3m long). If it was done by the likes of Noblett or Burgess, who are the only other Australian furniture makers I’m aware of who did tables like this, I would have seen others around after being in this business for 22 years (but I haven’t). It could be Danish but to be honest I’m more inclined to say it’s Australian and custom-made. It was found in Kenmore (an upmarket suburb in Brisbane) in a huge house. This is the only information I have about the piece and this fits in my educated guess as to the maker. (I’d say it was probably made in Brisbane- us “Brisbanites” made great furniture too!)
I’ve used the word “investment” above to describe our offer here. There is no other way to describe it! The word “purchase” is plain wrong. Australian-made furniture in the 1970’s and earlier is HOT property at the moment. Some of our Australian-made pieces have QUADRUPLED in value since COVID (I can show you evidence of this if you want!) and incredibly I think some of these designs still have a long way to go before they sit alongside European pieces in value (where they should sit). Australian furniture from the 1940’s to late-1970’s is award-winning on an INTERNATIONAL platform and highly regarded. Chinese imports then flooded our country and killed the industry. (We can’t compete with $1 an hour and have given up trying- Tessa Furniture an Australian institution spanning 50 years closed in 2019 unable to compete with these flat-packed international offerings any longer- not that any Australian politician seems to give a shit. They’re certainly not doing anything about it anyway!)
Clever in design, this table has THREE size options- an individual extension piece can be added to seat 8 comfortably or BOTH pieces extend the table to seat 10 (or 12 if you’re happy to get close to your guests!). Tables in this Danish style above 2.4m long are as rare as hen’s teeth. With 10 vintage chairs tables like this look incredible and is a sight not often seen.
Teak pieces from the 1960s with the Danish aesthetic have enjoyed enduring popularity, this adds to the investment appeal here. It’s at the pinnacle- if you like this style, you will not find a better table. It has VINTAGE quality construction- all joints are solid and strong after about 50 years! It will stand the test of time (and already has)!
I’ve had a few of these Parker tables in the past 17 years- one was bid up to over $1700 on ebay in 2007. A second one was bid up to $1850 in 2008. The construction quality on offer here is a no-brainer. This table is in fully original condition- just look at it! There’s no guessing the quality on offer here. The tone of the extension pieces, match the rest of the table better than any other table like this I’ve had in the past (that’s also had no restoration). After modern tables have ended up as landfill this piece will still be doing exactly what it’s been built to do. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
