Background Info and Provenance

A HAND-MADE Don Wreford vase that’s engraved to the base, “Don Wreford Daylesford ’87”. The ’87 would stand for the year of production which makes this one of Wreford’s earlier works. Wreford is known as a leading figure in Australian glass and has had solo shows overseas and throughout Australia, notably the Art of Glass exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1998. His work has been acquired by several national and international collections. He taught himself the medium of stained glass in the early 1970’s and then later trained at the Jam Factory in Adelaide under the direction of Stanislav Mellis, Julio Santos and Richard Morell. He set-up several hot glass studios in Victoria before permanently settling in Daylesford not far from Melbourne.
I have chosen to display this piece in my own space as it is a larger work by Wreford. I have enjoyed this amazing display of expressive energy. You can clearly see that the piece wasn’t planned and has spontaneously come into being from the hands and heart of Wreford. I love the biomorphic shape with all its curves and arcs and the wispy ethereal nature of the colouring. The delicate, airy white reminds me of clouds, the blue of a flowing stream and the green reminds me of the signs of life that appear at the beginning of spring after a long winter. I also love how it has a completely different shape depending on the angle from which it is displayed. You won’t find many with a more relaxed, expressive flow of life and energy.
It’s obvious this is a hand-worked piece that has come from the hands and heart of a person (and not a machine). Like all of Wreford’s work this is a ONE-OFF piece (he doesn’t tend to create the same thing over and over again like other artists.) It looks like a true piece of art to me- it’s creative and tells a narrative and wasn’t just made to look “pretty”.
Don Wreford pieces are highly-prized (I’ve seen small Wreford perfume bottles sell for around $200). Major pieces from Wreford rarely hit the market. I anticipate that this piece will draw the attention from people who collect Wreford’s pieces (or someone who just loves HAND-CREATED Australian art). This is certainly one to be passed from one generation to the next. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

This piece was created by hand in 1997 and presents extremely well for its age. It has NO chips, NO cracks, NO repairs. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
