Background Info and Provenance
(This description was written in 2023.)
A mid-century sideboard / buffet designed and constructed by MELBOURNE furniture maker, BURGESS. This piece has a Burgess stamp in the top drawer plus the S1 Furniture Maker’s Mark used in Australia in the 1960’s which further verifies the age and provenance of the piece. I love the cat’s-eye handles and the nice colouring of the timber. You could be forgiven for thinking this is a Parker piece. Parker did sideboards nearly exactly the same. EXCEPT, this one is even better than a Parker! This vintage teak sideboard is also finished on the back so it could be displayed in the centre of a room. Because the back is fully-finished the back edge and both side edges are also finished. These 3 edges have a thick piece of teak covering them that will protect them from knocks and bumps. Parker sideboards don’t have this. If the back edges of Parker sideboards are knocked, they chip and flake off, reducing the value of the piece. This one by Burgess is a much better investment. Parker sideboards in this design fetch about $2800. This Burgess piece is a no-brainer investment that will appreciate in value in future years
This Burgess vintage teak sideboard is about 60 years old. It’s in excellent condition after all these years because of the brilliant construction quality. Why spend money on items that won’t last? When you invest in vintage furniture it’s a win for you financially but also for our environment because any furniture that’s over 50 years old and still going strong is bound to be passed onto future generations.
