Background Info and Provenance
(This description was written in 2023.)
A mid-century cocktail cabinet designed and constructed by an AUSTRALIAN furniture maker back in the 1960’s- it was most likely made in Melbourne. This vintage piece still retains the S1 Furniture Maker’s Mark used in Australia in the 1960’s verifying the age and provenance of the piece. I love the cocktail section. The top opens out and it also has a mirrored bench and glass shelf- this makes for a really practical piece. Plus there’s heaps of handy storage in the base section. I also like the dimensions- it’s not big and cumbersome at all. It’s pretty narrow meaning you’ll always find the perfect spot for it- even in a small apartment.
I’m not sure who made it. It has a similar look to all the trendy furniture being made in Australia at the time. Parker and Chiswell made similar pieces but I think this one has much better dimensions. John Grimes comes to mind, but that’s just an educated guess. Vintage teak furniture with this Danish aesthetic was very popular in the 1960’s and has enjoyed an enduring resurgence over the last 20 years or so. These items have come to supersede trends- I can’t see why they won’t always be sought after. Vintage teak furniture in this Parker style has increased in value over the last 20 years (and quite noticeably). It is more likely than not that this furniture will continue to appreciate in value making this piece a really astute investment. (This is not a purchase at all but an investment.)
This vintage teak cocktail cabinet is about 60 years old. It’s in excellent condition after all these years because construction quality. Why spend money on items that won’t last? When you invest in vintage furniture it’s a win for you financially but also for our environment because any furniture that’s over 50 years old and still going strong is bound to be passed onto future generations.
