What a stunning chair! I love the mix of oak and woven seagrass. The oak is sleek and minimalist with a stylish, pared-down form, the seagrass has texture and activity which provides a subtle contrast. I love the earthiness of this piece. A lot of designer furniture today has a brash, clinical look. This piece on the other hand is warm and inviting. I have no idea who the designer is- I scrolled through Google Images for some time and gave up. It’s special- that’s all I know.
I’ve not had anything like it in over 21 years of trading. I’m inclined to think it’s Danish (or Scandinavian)- I’d be shocked to hear it’s Australian. This timber was not used by Australian makers back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I really like the light oak timber- it pares back the overall look and gives the piece a classic Scandinavian aesthetic. Virtually all pieces in Australia in this style are made from teak (or other dark timbers). I can’t imagine you’ll come across another of these ever again… And it’s in amazing vintage condition too!
Comfort also gets a tick. The seat slants back, the back is angled and has a curve also. This chair has been made to hold you in perfect seating position. This piece has a similar look to the iconic Finn Juhl SW-96 Easy Chair. I am probably going to get shot down for saying this but I like this even more than this celebrated Finn Juhl design. You don’t need to pay AU$42,000 for a Finn Juhl vintage chair (!)- this one has even more magic in my eyes. The flow of the design really inspires.
The construction quality is also brilliant- it has certainly not been slapped together- the craftsmanship is expert. I wouldn’t be surprised if I later hear that this is highly esteemed design. It may even be worth $42,000! lol! Where did the seller pluck that figure? Uranus ?? But in all seriousness, most vintage chairs of this esteem are priced in the realms of AU $3000 – AU $4000. At our price, this piece is a no-brainer INVESTMENT. I can’t see this piece losing any value in the future. More likely it’s going to increase- particularly if you can find a definitive maker.
The construction quality is unquestionable- just look at it after about 60 years! I’d place it in the 1950’s. After many modern chairs have ended up as landfill, this vintage piece will continue to be passed through the generations- a symbol that when something has been done well it will live on. There are no better ways I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
