Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2023. Some information may be time-sensitive.)

This 1960’s design by Italian, Alvino Bagni, would have to be one of the best pieces of pottery ever made. (Definitely one of the best pots anyway.) And it’s not just me who thinks so. The “Sea Garden” series by Alvino Bagni is sought-after the world over. I’ve often seen pots in this series priced at up to AU $2000 and even more. I think what makes the Sea Garden pieces so successful is the originality and creativity shown in the artistry. Back in the day, the late-1950’s – 1960’s, this was ground-breaking design. There’s a real brutalist flavour here but these designs were released before other artists adopted this style in decorative arts. The design is big and brash but there’s a contrast with the colouring. There’s almost a carnival essence to the painted decor- there’s brightness there with movement and frivolity. Obviously when the name of this series is applied, we can all see the “Sea Garden” being depicted. These pieces are like bringing a piece of under-water magic into your home. I love these earthy colours- so easy to add to any interior. As you can see, this one is currently much-loved in my home and will be sadly missed when it goes- but this is the only way for me invite something else that’s just as exciting and inspiring into my home. (I’m a rare breed I think- I sell vintage items but am not a hoarder).

I love Bitossi pots, but this one is much better in my eyes. These are much harder to find compared to Bitossi and a bit more artful in my opinion. This is a great investment piece- I can’t see it losing any value whilst you get to use and enjoy it in your home.

This piece was produced by Alvino Bagni in the 1960’s. Rosenthal Netter and Raymor sold a lot of Italian decorative pieces in America during these formative years. These two retail brands sold quite a lot of Bitossi pieces but other artists including Alvino Bagni were also represented (but in much smaller numbers). This piece has the distinctive ITALY imprint on the underside of one foot which is the marking of Bagni pieces. This marking gives the piece irrefutable history and investment appeal. When similar pieces are valued at AU $2000 and more, this is an obvious investment- I believe it will easily gain value in the near future (in the right gallery it could be sold for double this right now … and pretty quickly I’d say). Alvino Bagni started off working for Bitossi and later cut loose and established his own studio. His designs are distinctly his own- they’re highly-celebrated and very collectable on a worldwide platform. This piece shows us why.

This piece is a lot rarer than virtually every vintage Italian pottery piece and has at least the same degree of handiwork.

The real beauty of owning a vintage HAND-crafted piece like this, is knowing it won’t be in vogue for just a season or even a couple of years before ending up as landfill. This Alvino Bagni piece will continue to be handed down through the generations gathering more stories as it passes hands. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
