Description
BOTH of these lounges SOLD in the first 2 weeks they were listed (2023) for AU $3,600 (for BOTH). This suite did have some condition issues hence the low sale price.
Priced at $1840 for the 3-seater sofa only (the longer one). The 2.5-seater is priced separately. We would like to keep this suite together but may consider splitting up the suite particularly if we have interest in each individual piece.
LOCATION- being sold under consignment by a private seller in Ocean Shores, BYRON BAY area. Delivery of one sofa to Sydney would be about $320. Both would cost about $440 to get to Sydney. I personally travelled to Byron Bay to work with this lounge suite (and a few other items in this area).
Provenance and Background Info
(Written in 2023).
An incredible vintage designer sofa stocked by Artes Studios in Sydney back in the 1970’s. (Price is for the larger sofa only- the other sofa is priced separately.) It’s highly likely this design is Italian. Artes Studios was the leader in providing designer furniture to the Australian public back in the 1970’s. The designs they stocked that were not Australian came from Europe, usually Italy. In 1979, Artes Studio was bought by Kevin Jarrett and then in 1986 became Arredorama. Today, the company is known as SPACE Furniture. This is a SPACE Furniture equivalent of the 1970’s.
I believe it’s an Italian suite but despite exhaustive research I can’t find any photos of this design in Google images. I don’t think it’s Australian- nothing like this was made in Australia back in the day and the leather looks like buffalo leather to me. I know what vintage leather used in premium Australian furniture back in the 1970’s looks like and this is NOT Australian leather. The leather here was used on premium European designs in the 1970’s. I think it’s buffalo leather- it’s extremely thick and textured too. You will not find better quality leather.
I love the architectural look of this suite- the upright posts are slanted and the high elevation off the floor contributes to its stately appearance. This suite definitely attracts attention but is not over-the-top. The design is refined and minimalist with just the right number of interesting design accents. The hockey straps along the back add to the cool, cutting-edge style.
The comfort also gets a tick- this sofa promotes casual, relaxed lounging. The hockey / bungee straps need attention to get the comfort back to how it was back in the 1970’s but I can’t see this being difficult to achieve. I saw a few youtube videos- one was entitled, “how to attach bungee cord ends” which showed you how to replace the cord section. There was also another video entitled, “how to tighten a bungee cord.” If this was my own item I would have attended to this- it’s a consignment item though and the owners are in the process of moving overseas so don’t have time to look into this.
There’s one last tick I need to stock anything in iNVISeDGE- it has to be a good investment for my buyer. If the bungee cords were replaced, this sofa would be priced at $3,500 in iNVISeDGE or possibly more. In America on 1stdibs, something of this stature and presence would command about AU $7,000. The quality is exceptional, the design is one of the best sofa designs I’ve seen and when the bungee straps are replaced the comfort will be brilliant. (The suite can be used as is but you need to be mindful about how the cushions sit on the back when you sit down).
Due to the quality of the build, this suite looks really good after about 50 years of use. If looked after it is set to be passed from this generation to the next- a symbol that when something is done well in every regard, it will live on. We don’t need to subscribe to this throw-away mentality anymore and if we look at the big picture investing in quality design isn’t expensive. When something holds up to this many years of use, the quality is assured. There’s no better way to invest in your home and in the future of this planet. Investing in items built to last (and this suite has already proven that) is our only way out of this mess!
