Provenance and Background Information

An incredible feature chair designed in the 1960’s by the famous Arne Jacobsen (of Swan chair and Egg chair fame). This Danish design, known as the FH4355, has a an iconic Scandinavian aesthetic- it’s looks amazing but the comfort is just as good! This chair has to be experienced to get the full appreciation of the comfort. The angles are spot-on- this chair and footstool hold you in perfect seating position. The high back supports your shoulders and head making it the perfect reading or relaxation chair. But despite the high back, the piece is still refined and minimalist in looks- some high-back chairs can look out of proportion and “clunky”- this one also looks amazing.
The other thing this chair has going for it is investment appeal. Fritz Hansen pieces are sought-after the world over PLUS this piece has the date on the label- 1987- it was made whilst all Fritz Hansen pieces were still being made in Denmark. Danish Fritz Hansen manufacturing moved offshore to Poland in 2012. The Polish made pieces don’t have the same investment appeal as the Danish ones. Additionally, these chairs have sold in the past via 1stdibs for around $3,500 each (without the matching footstool). Another 1stdibs listing shows an asking price of about AU $12,000 for a pair- crazy price for something like this which I don’t think anyone in their right mind would pay but they sold so the seller must have still got a pretty sum for them.
The St Catherine design was created for use in the Saint Catherine College in Oxford. There’s a student chair (that has similar dimensions to a dining chair). It looks similar to this design. Whether this chair was designed for the college as well (to be used in waiting areas) I’m not sure but this design is widely known as the St Catherine design.
This is a rare opportunity to own a Fritz Hansen design classic (that was done in a very limited number) for a fraction of its real value. The beauty of investing in designer originals is knowing they will hold their value over time (or increase in value along with inflation), plus you can be assured of the quality and durability you’re getting. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill. (These chairs are already 36 years old- and look at them! They won’t be ending up in landfill anytime soon.)
