Provenance and Background Info

(Predominantly written in 2014 but updated for this listing in 2023)

A stunning dining table by highly-awarded company, Pacific Green. (The chairs have sold.) This design is called, Messina. This table is simple yet still different. It would work with many dining chairs and the resulting suite would have a true designer edge. The quality of the piece is exceptional and a Pacific Green Messina dining table had a retail price tag of $2,350 back in 2014. Since COVID, new Pacific Green Furniture has increased in cost dramatically. During COVID, all the prices were taken down from the Pacific Green website. I’d say the new price of one of these tables would be around AU $3,000 in 2023, but probably more though.

This particular Pacific Green dining table is over 20 years old- this is one of their earlier designs. Pacific Green later updated this design. I personally prefer the older design that’s on offer here. The jute lashing detail (that was later added) adds more activity to the table and full suite. I think the jute-lashing detail on just the dining chairs is enough- the table doesn’t need it. What’s more, without the lashing-detail, the table is much easier to marry with lots of other dining chairs (they wouldn’t need to be Pacific Green chairs with this table). The table design is very minimalist (particularly, without the lashing detail). The rounded edges soften the look and the pedestal base is tucked under the table (to also reduce visual impact). The other great thing about this dining table is the age. With UV exposure over a long period of time, the table is much lighter in colour than normal. This means the table is now a mid-timber-tone. This will make it much easier to match in with a larger number of timber dining chairs. But the chairs wouldn’t even need to be timber. Add in chrome and white dining chairs, with a white decorative item in the middle of the table and this table will add a warm, earthy element into your space and allow other timber pieces to be worked into your interior.

This Pacific Green table is about 25 years old- it’s SOLID coconut wood and should last forever. Outstanding construction quality is what has helped Pacific Green rise to prominence and pretty quickly too.

The Pacific Green business originated from the Post & Rail brand which started in Sydney in the 1970’s. Post & Rail grew into an international brand and in the late 1980’s they did the unthinkable. With a highly successful brand they changed tack completely. With the world’s new concern with deforestation and ecological threats, Post & Rail closed and re-branded as Pacific Green. Pacific Green searched the world for a sustainable and resilient timber for their future furniture production- the solution? Coconut wood. In the South Pacific, they found vast abandoned plantations of coconut palm trees, which were commercially planted in the early-1900s but had reached the end of productive fruiting. The best part? Coconut wood is more resilient than virtually any timber- it thrives in areas battered by tropical cyclones.

After I’d found out, I wanted to start stocking new Pacific Green furniture in iNVISeDGE (which would be a first because iNVISeDGE “recycles” furniture). But there’s more. Pacific Green set a benchmark for modern, sustainable business in the Pacific. In the late-1980’s land was leased, not bought, to respect indigenous ownership. Their factory was built in consultation with the surrounding villages and employed only local people. Business and skills training programmes were established. The majority of the company is owned by Fijians- the drive of the business is still Australian, the designing arm happens here in Australia.

Pacific Green today has grown from that little furniture-making firm that started in the Rocks, Sydney back in 1973 (as Post & Rail). I am inspired and heartened that this little Australian business changed tack the way they did back in the 1980’s when ecological threats were barely thought of.

The design sells itself- it’s this story behind the table that needs to be told. You can see from the photos how good this table is.

You can also see the durability of the construction just from photos- SOLID TIMBER and it’s thick- it can be sanded back at any time to bring it back to new making this a life-time investment. If you like Mark Tuckey and Nicholas Datner tables this one is just as special. And Pacific Green is not a flash in the pan- they’ve been around for about 50 years now.

Items like this are the reason I do this job. They ignite inspiration- Pacific Green Furniture ticks every box and prove that businesses can be successful, ecologically responsible and socially-aware. This table will become an antique in the future and continue to tell stories well after you and I are gone (just like Post & Rail furniture has already done). There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

This table is in excellent condition. The structure is solid, sturdy and strong with no movement in any joint area. There are NO cracks around the joint areas, NO structural defects at all. The table top is in brilliant condition for a table that's about 25 years old. As shown in the photos the table-top has no noticeable damage at all but it is about 25 years old so obviously will have signs of use (but nothing that warrants a mention). ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
