Description

List of other Zoo Series we currently have available for sale. This list is subject to change. Please SMS or call if you have interest in any Zoo creature pictured. If you’re overseas, message us through Facebook or Instagram.

Small Hippo– approx. 10cm long – AUD $64

Large Hippo– approx 13cm long- AUD $82 (there’s a ginormous hippo as well that’s 23cm in length- it’s too big to be displayed with the others- it looks odd with the smaller ones).

Small Elephant– approx 10cm long- AUD $78. I just came across another small elephant just recently so have one available. It’s the first small elephant I’ve had (apart from the one in my own collection) for 8 years!

Large Elephant– 15cm long – AUD $97 (the elephants are quite hard to get in Australia- I got this one from overseas- the weight means less of them have come to Australia because of international shipping costs are expensive.)

Rhino– we sold one in 2020 for AUD $97. All zoo creatures (c. early-1970’s) are getting harder to get and costing more for us to get. We paid more for our next rhino so our next one is priced at AUD $100.

Small lion– 10.5cm long- $64 (The small lion is much harder to get compared to the larger lion. I think the larger 15cm lion came out first and the small one was done much later so had a smaller production run.)

Large Lion– AUD $68 (it’s about 15cm long). (There’s a ginormous lion as well that’s 26cm in length- it’s too big to be displayed with the others- it looks odd with the smaller ones.)

Smaller Giraffe– 18cm (it’s still much taller than all the larger animals in this series)- AUD $120 (The giraffes are hard to get in Australia. I sold one a couple of years ago but I’m pretty sure I have another one in storage. I won’t ever sell the one in my own collection- they’re too hard to get these days.)

Larger Giraffe- 24cm high. Easily the largest of the zoo series. These are heavy and were never retailed in Australia back in the day therefore they need to come in from overseas. Overseas shipping is expensive particularly for something of this weight. These are almost impossible to get in Australia- AUD $185.

Two-humped Camel– These are REALLY REALLY hard to get but I got another one just recently. I’ve had only two of these in over 22 years of trading! (And one of these is in my own collection.) AUD $145

Tiger– Also REALLY hard to get. It took me about 9 years to get a second one- I now have an extra that’s available. AUD $130

Deer– I recently got my first deer. (I didn’t even know they existed until just recently!) AUD $130.

Small & Large Zebra– I think I currently have spares of these. These are more commonly specified as a horse but I think it’s a zebra. Small- AUD $80. Large- AUD $115.

Curly-horned Ibex / Antelope / Ram– 14cm high- see the separate listing we have online for this one. Put Kosta Boda Ibex in our SEARCH box.

Rooster / Peacock / Bird– see separate listing- Put Kosta Boda Bird into our SEARCH box.

Other Boda items I have that are in related series (same style as these)-

Boda Unicorn- 15cm long (Fantasy Series I think it’s called)- $78

Boda Kennel Series- I have most in the Kennel Series (the dogs). Enquire if you have interest. We have a separate listing for the Kosta Boda crystal dogs.

Background Info and Provenance

The Boda Curly-Horned Ibex / Ram is where my love affair for (Kosta) Boda zoo animals began. Back then I was dealing only in furniture but when decorative arts pieces really caught my eye I’d buy them (if I could afford them!). It was in a crowded auction centre in 2005 (back in the old Gavan Hardy Auction days in Sydney) and this ibex really stood out to me. I think there’s a magic in this design and still is for me to this day. (The one I found in 2005 is still part of my collection- it took me 17 years to come across another one to offer my customers- here it is.) Perhaps it’s the simplicity of this design that gives it its magic, the sparkly crystal … or the spiral itself- that magical form that has no beginning and no end. Whatever it is, this is my favourite of all the Kosta Boda zoo series. There are a couple of other animals that are rarer than this one but I like the design of this the best.

Plus this ibex design was also what sparked my interest in Kosta Boda as a manufacturer (although this is NOT Kosta Boda- it’s Boda because it dates it to pre-1976 BEFORE Kosta and Boda had amalgamated.

There is surprisingly little information available about Kosta Boda zoo figures- I can’t find anything online really except a couple of discussion boards where people say how much they like them. Some dealers say they were designed by Erik Hoglund, others say Bertil Vallien. I’ve just recently read online that Kosta Boda attributes ALL these designs to Bertil Vallien, the most successful of all Kosta Boda’s designers. (A collector on a discussion board wrote to Kosta Boda and they supplied this information.) This is exciting because the value of all Bertil Vallien’s designs are well worth watching- he’s now 84 years old and I’m pretty sure he’s retired now. He hasn’t released anything for some years now.

Kosta Boda is arguably the most successful glassworks in the world. These creatures are all HAND-MADE from crystal and about 50 years old (written- 2022). Some are much harder to get than others- the ibex/goat is amongst the rarest with the exception of only a couple such as the elusive tiger. (I’d say the ones that were released first had a longer production run so there’s more of them out there.)

This Kosta Boda ibex does NOT have a label (virtually all in Zoo Series don’t) however I’ve compared him to the labelled ibex I have and he’s identical (the clarity of the crystal, the proportions, everything is the same).

I can’t see the Kosta Boda zoo series losing any value in the future. There’s no chance this piece will end up in the bin because he’s gone out of style- you’ll be one link in a chain that might go on for centuries. If there comes a time to part with him, this vintage piece should hold the same investment appeal in the future as he does now (most likely more- I’ve seen them increase in value over the last 10 years). There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint. (What a great gift idea!)

2309, 2003 and 2208

This ibex is in excellent condition for its age. There is NO damage- NO chips, NO cracks, NO damage. He’s about 50 years old so may have some minor signs of use but nothing that’s noticed. He has a length of approx 15cm and stands about 14cm at the highest. Read my 1200+ feedback comments (ALL for vintage furniture/decorative arts SALES). This is your guarantee that I strive to describe all my items as accurately as I can and I will not stock items unless they are in excellent condition. PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.

Additionally please be aware that in Australia ALL consumers are protected BY LAW if the goods or services they buy are not as described. (But this should be of no concern- in our first 15 years of trading we have over 1150 positive ebay feedback comments and ZERO negative feedback comments.) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On occasions a DIRECT BANK DEPOSIT can be made at the time of collection. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On occasions CASH payment when you collect your item may also be available.
