These Parker sideboards from the early-1970’s are a real gem. In my opinion they’re one of the best items Parker ever produced- I’m more keen on this design compared to any other sideboard design that has ever come out of Australia. I love the geometric styling and symmetry of the design. This piece is very pleasing to the eye but also has a boldness that gets noticed. I also love the solid, thick bordering- this creates a very subtle focal point although there’s not really any real point of focus at all. This is a tidy, minimalist piece of design; the sleigh legs top off the stylishness of the design.
This Parker design is not easy to get and to my knowledge is Parker’s own. Many of Parker designs were taken from what was being done in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries back at the time. I’ve not seen any others from the era (Australian or international) that look like this.
If you get a plate-glass top or Perspex piece cut for the top (and neither would be costly), you’ll have a lifetime investment. And the investment appeal here is very strong too. Because these are hard to get, the design sits outside of what was done to death all through the 1960’s and to my eye, this design is close to perfect for a cabinet in this style. If you look after it, it should only continue to increase in value (along with inflation at least). I would personally have one of these in my own home (but would get a perspex top cut to protect the top.)
Oh and I almost forgot; I also like their choice of timber. I don’t think it’s teak or blackwood ?? Maybe it’s Tasmanian Oak- I’m not a timber expert so I’m not sure but there’s virtually no patterning in the timber grain. It’s a “clean”, non-elaborate grain in the timber which works perfectly for this design. Any patterning in the timber would have ruined the clean lines and tidy styling. This Parker sideboard is certainly up there as being one of the best to ever come out of Australia- it boasts the construction quality for which PARKER is renown and the investment appeal on offer here is a no-brainer. Miss it and you may not come across another one again.
