Background Information and Provenance

(Written in 2024)

A fascinating piece of furniture design history. Made in South Melbourne in the 1950’s by MALMO FURNITURE, this brand may not be well-known but make no mistake the QUALITY is at least as good as FLER chairs, if not better. The label boldly claims, “FULLY GUARANTEED. BUILT TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS. AGAINST FAULTY WORKMANSHIP.” They are pretty bold claims but not claims at all- this has now proven to be fact. These chairs are now about 70 years and look at them! There’s absolutely NO disputing the validity of what’s written on the label… AGAINST FAULTY WORKMANSHIP- love it … and that sums it all up … but wait, there’s more!

Apart from the irrefutable DURABILITY and QUALITY, what I love so much about these chairs is the COMFORT. These hold you in perfect seating position. The seat seating system in web configuration has the perfect amount of “give”- webbing will not and can not do the same. The web-configured springs distribute your body-weight perfectly and what’s more it is much more durable than webbing. Webbing sags and needs to be replaced after 10 – 15 years of use. The web-configured springs usually keep doing the job for several lifetimes.

The other thing I love about these chairs is the look. LOVE these colours! The extreme light-coloured timber frames gives the chairs a freshness that eludes a lot of mid-century modern furniture. The majority of chairs from this era are teak or blackwood that gives the chairs a “heavier-look”- these chairs are light and fresh-looking. And love the original apple-green upholstery from the 1950’s- so cool! This ORIGINAL fabric from the era is also as tough as nails. It was made to last the long-haul and has! It shows minimal signs of use (virtually none really) after about 70 years- incredible! And this upholstery gives the chairs a unique vintage look that renovated vintage chairs don’t have. The beautiful sculptured frames add a touch of class and elegance to these durable pieces. I like the look at least as much as the famous FLER SC58 chairs! But the QUALITY in my eyes is even better than the famous SC58 chair by Fred Lowen.

The last thing (this description ended up much longer than I expected but they are great chairs!)- the investment appeal here is also irrefutable. If these were SC58 chairs in this original vintage fabric and with restored timber frames (like these are) I’d be pricing them at about $1600 the pair, probably more. The price on these is a no-brainer. There’s absolutely no way these chairs could even be made in China and stocked by the likes of Freedom Furniture etc for this price. Bravo to quality vintage design and construction!

After much modern furniture falls apart and ends up as landfill, this pair of 70 year-old chairs will be passed on to yet another generation- a symbol that when something has been done well, it will live on. This pair of VINTAGE Malmo Furniture chairs (in the style of FLER SC58 chairs) get a resounding tick in EVERY category. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

This pair of chairs from the mid-1950's present extremely well for their age. There are no condition issues that warrant a mention. Use our Zoom-in tool to clearly see what's on offer. Both chairs have lasted about 70 years- there's no reason why they won't last another 70! The structure of both chairs is brilliant (with steel sub-structure)- these chairs have endured many years of use- they are still comfortable and completely sturdy. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ There are NO breaks, NO movement in any joint, NO cracks around any joint area, NO repairs. The cushioning is completely plush and comfortable. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The upholstery is in brilliant condition for chairs that are 70 years old! There's no damage or signs of use that warrant a mention. They show minor signs of use and age but there's absolutely nothing that's unsightly- amazing for 70 year old chairs that are in original condition. Use the Magnifying Tool. There is very minor darkening to the fabric up around where the head sits but this is very negligible and to be completely expected- not even worth the mention really. The frames have been restored- not because they needed it but because they were originally stained walnut. They did this coming out the art deco era (this further substantiates that these chairs are about 70 years old). Walnut was big in art deco times but this timber ran out by the 1950's. I MUCH prefer the light timber frames (I think it's Beech ??)- it suits these chairs WAY more than how the Walnut colour would have looked when the chairs were first sold all those years ago. I doubt you'll ever find chairs with the original fabric of this age that present any better- they truly are a special find. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements. Contact us if you need the dimensions. Across- cm by about cm back with a height of cm (nice and high for an armchair). The seat height was cm and the front of the armrest was cm in height.
