Provenance and Background Information

(Written in 2024).

Great to pair with any sofa, this AUTHENTIC mid-century PAIR of Parker armchairs with the matching footstool is one of the most sought-after Australian furniture designs ever. One glance of the photos is enough to show you why- what a graceful shape! The refined elegance, the minimalist sculpted frames are just beautiful. Made in the mid-1960’s, this suite now has had about 60 years of use- all of these chairs are 100% original- never been restored in any way. The timber (which I think is teak) hasn’t even been sanded back or re-finished over this time and just look at the condition! No guessing the QUALITY of what’s on offer here either. This suite has been built to last and has. Even the original finish is strong, durable and doing the job exactly as it should. Parker has long been regarded as one of the best furniture makers in Australian history. Their designs from the 1950’s and 1960’s are responsible for them being held up on a pedestal that no other Australian furniture makers ever have.

It’s not the look that’s most impressive about this Parker Furniture ensemble- it’s the craftsmanship you can’t see. These chairs are 100% rock-solid and sturdy after about 60 years of use. Why? Because the joint areas have been perfectly crafted to lock together at each corner so they will last generations. Modern offerings that look similar are not made this way. In fact a recent customer of ours bought a modern sofa that looked very similar to this- the joints were so LAUGHABLY bad that this lady (an average-adult size and the ONLY person who ever used the piece) ended up on the floor after just 3 MONTHS (and the shop refused to give her a refund). Just deplorable- resources and energy ending up as landfill within months of being made.

You won’t get this here- just look at this GENUINE Parker ensemble after 60 years of use! PLUS they’re in fully original condition! These lounge chairs gets every tick in EVERY box and resoundingly so- especially COMFORT. Look at the seat section- it slants back at just the right angle. The backrest is also set at the right angle. These chairs are designed to hold you in perfect seating position. All the stress is taken off your back- the chair holds you confidently and properly. These Parker lounge chairs were made back in the day when craftspeople had pride in their work- when brands stood proudly behind what they made. These days much of the furniture flooding our market from developing economies has NO brands on them at all so NO-ONE has to take accountability for the landfill they’re producing.

COMFORT, QUALITY, STYLE and LOOKS all get a big tick here but one of the biggest selling points are the loose cushions sitting on the exposed timber frame. This makes these Parker armchairs one of the most PRACTICAL lounge pieces on the market. Re-upholstery and cleaning the covers is the easiest out of ANY chairs you can buy. The covers can be removed and put through the GENTLE cycle of your washing machine at any time. (Just return them whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage. Don’t hang lounge covers out to dry on your clothes line or worse, put them through the dryer. They will shrink!)

In my eyes the biggest selling point here is the investment appeal- this is GENUINE VINTAGE Parker Furniture (from the mid-1960’s). and one of the most popular designs they ever did. Love the curves and love the contrast created by the woven cane backs (which are also in amazing original condition). VINTAGE Parker lounges enjoy formidable investment appeal today. Partly because these chairs are RARE. In 23 years of trading this is only the SECOND pair of Parker armchairs from this era that we’ve had. Matching pairs are almost impossible to get. All I could find online was one chair in the exact same design (but that frame was stained dark)- that single chair was priced at $2,850. The only other similar matching pairs I could find were priced at $4,500 the PAIR and over $5,000 the PAIR. In my eyes, this pair is a better design- PLUS AUTHENTIC PARKER will always fetch more than comparable designs because in this style, Parker has always sat at the pinnacle. And to top off the investment appeal, there is a VERY FADED Parker label on the seat cushions so the provenance of this pair is irrefutable. If you ever get them re-upholstered I’d get the upholsterer to sew these labels back on (they are FEINT but still readable.

Because of the increasing values of vintage Parker, Parker Furniture started back up around 2008 and re-released this design (in a lighter coloured oak timber to match in better with today’s home). The SINGLE-SEATER chairs in this design were being sold through David Jones for $7,000 THE PAIR just a couple of years ago. (If they’re still making them today they’d most likely be more- all furniture increased noticeably in value since COVID.)

Why throw your money away buying furniture that’s questionable in quality? The QUALITY of these Parker armchairs is irrefutable. No-one could possibly argue that this furniture hasn’t been built to last- just look at these after about 60 years! After similar-looking offerings have collapsed and the owners have ended up on the floor! (after just 3 months of use), this suite will be passed onto a new owner and then eventually another new generation. I can’t think of any better way to invest in your home and help preserve our environment for future generations. “Recycling furniture” is one of your best ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Bravo to quality vintage Australian furniture!

This pair of chairs (and the footstool) are all in brilliant original condition for their age. There is NO separation in any joint, NO wobbles, NO looseness, NO cracks/ NO splits in the timber or around any joint- NO structural damage of any kind. They are all rock-solid pieces. Cosmetically they are in just as amazing condition- the timber presents extremely well for vintage chairs of this age- there's no damage at all that warrants a mention. There are a few minor tell-tale signs of use to the final finish only but nothing that warrants a specific mention. (No dents or scuffs into the timber etc) The finish is original- if they were mine I'd leave the timber exactly as it is. The timber has lightened with age (which is what happens). I prefer this lighter-tone. If you restore these frames (WHICH IS NOT NEEDED!) the tone of the timber will darken. The current finish and the top surface of the timber has lightened with age- if they were sanded the timber will darken. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The cushions are all original. These are latex cushions so the best quality money can buy. They are 60 years old now and the cushioning is doing exactly what it should be doing. I'd probably retain the original seat cushions and maybe replace the back cushions to make them a little softer (but again, this is not needed!). The covers are also original. They are doing the job and the white / light grey tone is light, fresh and neutral. The fabric does have minor signs of use and age but it is still quite presentable as the photos show. The chairs are totally usable as they are but the covers could be re-done at any time to further improve the value and look of your investment. And this is cheap and easy to do. Simply take the loose cushions with your chosen fabric to anyone with a sewing machine and voila (a new pair of chairs in days). The job is quick, easy and inexpensive. (It should cost less than $88 per cover, excluding your fabric. It's not time-consuming at all). ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The woven cane is in brilliant original condition with nothing that warrants a mention. A RARE pair in great original condition. The footstool is missing a chock in one corner. This corner is still 100% solid so it does not effect it AT ALL. (Could be easily replaced but the corners are so well-crafted that this is not necessary.) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The webbing / straps have recently been replaced (as shown in our photos). The strapping is close to new and is holding you in the proper sitting position (not sagging). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
