Provenance and Background Info
A fantastic mid-century sideboard designed and made by NATHAN Furniture of the UK, in the mid-1960s. This is easily one of the best sideboards iNVISeDGE has ever had. It’s made of SOLID TIMBER- there’s no shitty Parker chipboard in this piece. Solid timber sideboards from this era are the much smarter option and much harder to get! They’re a FOREVER investment- this one can be refinished as many times as you want. Despite what others may say, about 97% of sideboards from this era are CHIPBOARD VENEER. There are even dealers in this business who proudly state they are selling a solid timber sideboard when they are not … be careful! After about 24 years in this business this is the 3rd SOLID timber in this style we’ve ever had.
After studying what’s available in new furniture stores, I’d say the retail price ticket of a cabinet of this callibre would be about $3,700 new (but this is an AUTHENTIC vintage piece). This piece has NOT been flat-packed and sent from China in the thousands- it was MADE IN THE UK about 60 years ago and will be a statement in your home that’s all your own- one that will continue to increase in value, like it has for the full 24 years I’ve been in this business.
I love the black base. This accentuates the high elevation off the floor and the stylish elegance of the design. The design is minimalist and understated, with a couple of minor points of interest. The handles are also a smart choice- metal handles are the more expensive option and way-more durable. They also work really nicely with the design. The brass-ware on the ends of the feet is just as impressive and a sign of real quality. They rarely appear on sideboards of the era. They protect the ends of the legs from damage and also help balance the piece on uneven floors.
If you choose vintage furniture well it will reward you financially over time (many pieces increase in value in line with inflation but some designs can find sudden new favour and spike rapidly in value- I’ve seen many designs triple and quadruple in value- sometimes even more, in a matter of years.) The real beauty of owning vintage furniture though is knowing that by valuing what we already have, you’re helping in a small way to discourage the production of cheap, poorly-made items that are designed to end up as landfill within years. Buying vintage is not only a financial investment but an investment into the future of our planet.
