Background Info and Provenance
A LIMITED EDITION artist woodcut print (created BY HAND) by world-renowned artist, K H Hansen-Bahia (only 93 in this design were produced). Hansen-Bahia is a German artist, famous for his woodcut prints. His work is characterized by an elaborate design quality yet the subject matter is nearly always simple and expressive. He is famous for the fantasy feel of his work. Even though this is a landscape it still has his trademark feel. I love the colours which are what immediately drew me to it. His technique further draws you in. Though simple in flavour when you look closer, Hansen-Bahia’s work has an elaborate depth of colour and texture particularly in the rocky outcrops of this piece. Though I’ve seen quite a few woodcuts by Hansen-Bahia this is a favourite.
Hansen-Bahia surrealist treatment of his subjects has found a swarm of admirers world-wide … so much so that there’s now a museum for his work in the Brazilian city of Cachoeira. Hansen-Bahia died in 1978 but through this museum his work will continue to live on and inspire future generations. Hansen-Bahia is the recipient of many accolades and awards including the American Prize of International Graphic Arts in Buenos Aires in 1970. Hansen-Bahia’s first woodcuts were done in 1946- this one was created in 1965 when he was at the height of his game.
The famous Brazilian poet Jorge Amado added the name Hansen as a tribute to the Brazilian state of Bahia in the 1950s. He has since been known as Hansen-Bahia. However, he never denied his ties to his hometown of Hamburg, Germany.
Woodcut printing is a time-intensive process all done by HAND. Cutting back the timber requires great skill, time and energy therefore wood-cut prints are also high in prana (life energy).
If you believe artist jobs should NOT be given to machines consider investing in hand-made paintings or prints- this sends a clear message that you would like artist jobs to be given back to people. When you invest in hand-made art there are few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
This print painting is in excellent condition for its age with no noticeable damage to report at all. It’s second-hand and may show minor signs of this but nothing that’s noticed. This painting is printed onto artist’s paper which has an interesting texture. The actual print measures 41 cm by 30 cm. The paper measures 52.5 cm X 33.5 cm. This painting print has no frame. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
