Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2015.)

A PAIR of 1950’s single-seater SC55 lounge chairs made from 1955-1959 by FLER. (Price is for 2 chairs.) This is one of Lowen’s most coveted designs but singling out any is a hard task- I feel Lowen stands beside Grant Featherston as the designer who produced the most popular furniture designs Australia has ever seen (and will ever see). He created award-winning designs in the 1950’s (such as this), then continued through the 1960’s with designs such as the ever-popular FLER Narvik range but then many of his most prized and regarded designs came through the 1970’s and early 80’s when he set up Twen then Tessa Furniture. The design on offer here is one of Lowen’s earliest and certainly one of his best- stunning from all angles. The construction quality is also unheard of today. This is a solid wrought iron / metal frame and the timber is clad onto this metal support. It would be very difficult to break one of these chairs (you’d have to try bloody hard!). These chairs are both as solid as a rock after about 60 years of use.

Add comfort to the list of advantages- high back and great angles- these will suit those who are searching for vintage chairs that will be comfortable for their tall hubby (I get many people asking for this!)

The SC55 is RARE- this is the first pair I’ve stocked in over 13 years of trading. The Powerhouse Museum bought this design for their collection ages ago and rightly so- I saw this design on show the first time I visited the Powerhouse in Sydney. There have been many other museums, exhibitions and TV shows where FLER SC55 ‘s have been used- too many to list here- look at the photos above and you’ll understand there’s no question these are a stand-out piece of design. This pair is a strong investment- they should never lose any value- try getting that from new furniture! Investing in vintage furniture is a wise move financially and for our environment. Why? When chairs look like this after 60 years of use you are guaranteed of the construction quality and when they could be put on the floor of any furniture design store today and still look the part you know the design is timeless.

THE FABRIC

This upholstery is in amazing condition- very clean with NO stains, NO marks, NO damage. I’ve inspected the fabric closely- I believe it’s the original covering from the late 1950’s- the condition looks too good to be 50’s but I think they are just very well looked after chairs. Yes the fabric is a little “Nanna” for my liking but they are vintage chairs. I think this neutral colour would work amazingly well in a lot of homes and it certainly works with the design. I seriously considered these chairs for my home but I only need one. The fabric would work really well in my place and I like the idea these are fully original. I have harped on about this for awhile but I think the buyer should consider this fabric as it is. There will come a day where everyone will go completely gaga over them because these fabrics are being ripped off faster than they can make new fabrics and amongst the sea of replicas around, the vintage chairs in iconic vintage fabrics will soon stand out from the crowd. With this fabric you are ASSURED of the quality of the upholstery you’re getting- look at it 60 years on- the condition is incredible and the colour timeless.

Maybe 1904

This PAIR is vintage and overall in excellent condition for their age. The timber frames are brilliant. They’re solid and strong with NO breakage, NO cracks around any joint, NO movement in any joint, NO repairs- they’re extremely sturdy and as solid as a rock. Cosmetically the timber frames present very well- they’re about 60 years old so have minor signs of age and use but nothing that spoils them. I’d say these were restored in the last 5 years or so. The frames are in better condition than I normally see for 1950’s chairs. Most of the timber is Coachwood- there may be some Maple or Tasmanian Oak used as well but the majority of cuts are Coachwood. The iron (or whatever metal it is) is heavy and strong with no signs of damage at all. The inner frame under the upholstery is also metal and the back section has metal tension springs for added comfort. The cushion within the removable cushion is latex foam. This is original from the 1950’s. This is yet another indication of the quality on offer here. Latex is arguably the best cushioning you can buy- soft but very supportive. After 60 years this cushion has powdered slightly but this is fully contained within the heavy upholstery. You could remove this cushion- dust in down thoroughly wrap it in new Dacron. This is not necessary so I haven’t done it. I personally wouldn’t replace this cushion in a long time yet (if ever). It will keep doing the job for a long time yet. The upholstery is in amazing condition- very clean with stains, marks or damage. That should cover it- for 1950’s chairs they are in amazing condition. The SC55 single-seater chair measures 65cm across by about 72cm back with a height of 89cm. The seat height is 45cm and the front of the armrest is 59cm in height.
