Background Info and Provenance

A large HAND-MADE blue bulbous art glass piece by Erik Hoglund which can also be used as a candleholder. Certainly up there with the most stunning group displays I’ve put together this Hoglund glass piece is the “hero” of the group and without it, the group wouldn’t be quite the same. I was drawn to this one the second it came in and even though my collection has to be like a revolving door (so I can stay in business!) this piece ended up hanging around for several years. I just couldn’t let it go. There is something captivating about this one. The design is very pop-art / Memphis-like (1980’s) and the luminous colour is just stunning. I don’t think I’ve come across a colour (in art glass) that I’ve liked more. I recently saw this exact design in blue with a yellow collar around the top. It was substantially more expensive than what I’ve priced this one at (and with hefty postage fee to get it in from America) and I found myself actually thinking about buying it. That’s how much of a command this design has over me. It’s bizaare really- I come across a LOT of incredible stuff in this line of work but there’s something captivating about designs that are restrained but still really “pop”. The other thing that fascinates me is that this is distinctly Memphis in style (1980’s) but is not Memphis at all- it came out about 25 years BEFORE! Incredible!

This piece is HAND-MADE from a unique semi-opaque blue glass- the glass around the collar has the same glow but is not opaque. Hoglund was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker. He was affliated with Boda as a designer 1953-1973- it was in the early 1960’s this piece was produced. Hoglund revolutionized the Swedish glass movement and created unique works and artefacts in glass, wrought iron, and various combinations, wooden furniture and sculptures in various mediums. His work is included in museums around the world. He has also created over 150 commissioned works for public spaces in Sweden and overseas. Many of these public sculptures are valued around $100 000.

The art glass piece on offer in this auction is an example of one of his earlier works and VERY rare. (They were all done in limited editions.) Hoglund designed a number of shapes in this series and I found a couple of the other shapes while researching this listing (look on the 1st dibs website- various smaller ones are priced around AU $1000 each). In the week I looked there were none in this design for sale anywhere world-wide. I’ve seen this shape in this blue colour in one of the “glass-design bibles”- I can’t remember which book anymore. This piece is hand-inscribed (engraved) to the base as shown in a photo (H1653/200).

This is an important piece of glass design from a highly celebrated creator. It looks amazing as part of a group. (The others shown in the group are mainly Italian from the 60’s.) With the other shapes Hoglund made in this series this would look sensational. This piece is about 55 years old and will continue to tell stories after most modern stuff has ended up as landfill. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
