Provenance and Background Info
(These sold through iNVISeDGE in 2006 for $1500- the set of 6.)
I’m pretty sure these chairs were made by Chiswell in the late 1950’s. I’ve seen some people identify them online as Snelling but I don’t think they are. They do have a Snelling style and they’re certainly of that era (1950’s) but I’m pretty sure they’re by Chiswell. An incredible amount of work went into getting these chairs to look like this. (The frames were completely stripped back and re-finished and they were re-upholstered in a quality Warwick textile.) They were under-priced back when I sold them in 2006. These days (in 2018) I’d price this exact set at about $1695 for 6 chairs- good 50’s designs are hard to come by- particularly sets of SIX dining chairs. Four vintage dining chairs are easy to get- sets of six 1950’s vintage chairs rarely come up. These are very solid chairs- heavy, well-built and very sturdy.
