An exceptional quality PAIR of LEATHER lounge armchairs by B & B Italia. These are called the “Fat Sofa” designed by Patricia Urquiola in the early 2000’s. You can buy similar looking chairs- though they look pretty nasty- in moulded plastic, vinyl and the likes. These are in PREMIUM quality Italian LEATHER. These chairs retail NEW for about AU $14 000 the PAIR. It sounds like an obscene amount on money but you’re paying for the quality and B & B Italia’s know-how. They look fairly simple- but this is the attraction of the design- curved, flowing, minimalist with just a gentle slant of interest and intrigue. The construction on the other hand, is anything but simple. Working with leather is never easy but with all these curves the handiwork is nothing short of inspiring (and incredibly meticulous). They’re double-stitched in areas but around the back there are two zips. The underside leather is all secured with Velcro and the seat leather is also Velcro-ed into the back-join area. The zips on these chairs allow the upholstery to have a tight fit all the way around the frame. The Velcro allows some “give” when they’re sat on so the leather won’t crease and crack over time. This has taken an incredible amount of work and skill to achieve but this is why B & B Italia is at the forefront- their attention to detail is awesome. These have been designed to last the long-haul- with the majority of pieces that look similar the manufacturers don’t really care whether they last or not. The leather is obviously the best-quality Italian leather- these are a luxury investment and will last the long-haul (they’re already 10 years old!)

Another technological innovation is the use of slow-return viscoelastic foam that gradually adapts itself to the body and its posture. This cushioning is not only comfortable but also aids in helping the chairs look great over the long-haul.

These chairs boast durability, quality, beautiful looks but comfort hasn’t been compromised- they’re very comfortable easy chairs. The back is at a great angle and height and has some “give” for further comfort.

On top of this investment appeal is a “no brainer”. These retailed about 10 years ago for about AU $14 000. I can’t find any new leather ones for sale online (I don’t think they’re made in leather anymore). I did see a second-hand leather fat-sofa chair exactly like this for sale in the USA for $5906 FOR ONE (see the screenshot included with the photos) and I think that’s US dollars! This is a bargain price for top-of-the-range and never-to-be-seen-again chairs.

Investing in items that have been built to last is our only way forward (we can’t keep consuming the earth’s resources the way we are). This pair of B & B Italia chairs are not only an astute investment for your home but also helps in reducing your carbon footprint. (IF YOU WANT JUST ONE CHAIR LET ME KNOW. I BOUGHT THESE AS A SET OF 4. THE OTHER TWO WERE SENT TO BRISBANE- IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN 4 OR A PAIR OUT OF BRISBANE LET ME KNOW.)

As the photos show, BOTH CHAIRS are in exceptional condition. They’re about 10 years old but present extremely well for furniture of this age. Virtually nothing could ever happen to the structure of these chairs. The inner construction is metal so is strong, sturdy and heavy with NO movement or wobbles in any joint, NO breaks, NO repairs, nothing of that sort. _____ The leather is top-quality and shows virtually NO signs of use. No guessing the quality of leather here. After 10 years the leather on both chairs presents in exceptional condition. I avoid the word “new” as much as possible because I only deal in pre-loved furniture but in this case both chairs present as if they came off the showroom floor (very close to new). This is top-quality 100% REAL leather- I think the leather has another 50 years use left in it as is if it’s looked after. _____ Working with leather in these shapes presents a myriad of challenges for designers. The leather must have some give to stand up to use over time- if the leather is rigid in areas where there are curves and movement when the chairs get sat on, the leather will crack over time. Patricia Urquiola has overcome this challenge by using Velcro up under the seat section to secure the leather but also give it some flexibility- Velcro has also been used under the chair to secure the upholstery (around the full circumference). _____ _____ Measurements- 67cm across. Depth- about 67 cm. Height- 71cm. Seat height- 44cm. Depth of seat- 53cm. For FREIGHT- 0.32 cbm. Pair- 0.64 cbm.
