(This sideboard sold for $1595 through iNVISeDGE in 2011. Today in 2018 I’d price the exact same sideboard at $1895.)

A 1940’s art deco sideboard that I believe is Australian. This one is pretty much at the pinnacle of vintage furniture investments. The design is stunning, the workmanship complex and the quality A1. I have not had a deco sideboard of this callibre since 2007 when I ran my business out of Newtown in Sydney. That piece was bid up by a Brisbane buyer to $2100 and the buyer paid an additional $160 for freight. The one I sold before that went to a buyer in London who bid the sideboard up to $2200 and then paid an additional $1200 to ship the piece to England (with a 4-month wait)- the underbidder was in Japan. These sideboards tick every box as far as vintage furniture investments go and they mesmerize anyone who sees them. I’m virtually certain this piece is Australian- it’s great to see Australian furniture drawing interest from around Australia and the world. It makes me proud that Australians produced (and still produce) artisan furniture that stands alongside the best furniture offerings on a worldwide platform.

I love the incredible marbling in the burl timber veneer of this piece and the book-matching of the veneer. This is nature at its best- the swirls and patterns in this timber are truly mesmerizing. These veneer finishes are very difficult to achieve and rarely done anymore (if ever). I also love the curved front and how the drawers break up the busyness in the rest of the piece- as do the bold simple handles. The designers and artisans hit the nail on the head with this piece. The cabinet itself shows top-quality workmanship and construction. This sideboard will tell stories for generations to come (it has already been passed through several generations already) and symbolizes that when something has been done well it lives on. There is no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
