Description Written in 2008

An authentic 1970’s Falcon chair. The chrome Falcon chair is incredibly rare- I’ve come across less than a handful in the 6 years I’ve been in this business. From what I can establish, the chrome version was cancelled soon after the Falcon chair was released due to high production costs. As a result, the chrome version is very highly sought-after by design enthusiasts. The chrome Falcon chair I sold on-line last year attracted several interested investors from Europe, but an Australian buyer came up trumps and the chair went to Melbourne. With a sleek style and flowing lines, the Falcon chair has an unprecedented style that draws attention but at the same time is not overstated. In Australia these chairs were initially stocked by premium furniture retailer, Artes Studios (back in the 1970’s and early 80’s). They were not cheap back then so not many were sold. Artes Studios later became Space Furniture and in today’s terms a Space Furniture chair of this callibre is priced in the realms of $7000. This is the lower backed version and is supremely comfortable- perfect for reading the papers, watching TV or chatting. Not only a fabulous chair but an astute investment, I strongly believe original Falcon chairs will continue to rise in value in coming years. The chair is obviously of investment quality- the flat-bar chrome is solid steel so the chair is very heavy.

Add-on Bit Written in 2018 (11 years later)

I’m not surprised to report (11 years later) that yes these chairs have increased in value and significantly. I’d price the same chair at around $2750 these days. I haven’t come across a chrome one to buy for many years (maybe since this one). I prefer the chrome ones because they’re a lot more durable than the laminated plywood ones. I’ve seen the timber ones broken. The timber ones have to be misused to break but the chrome ones are pretty-much indestructible. Currently (2018) there are a few of these chrome Falcon chairs online in the USA for around AU $4000 each. I’ve also seen them priced in Melbourne for AU $4950. Falcons are worth more here in Australia compared to the USA. They’re a very solid investment and my estimate of $2750 in iNVISeDGE (2018) is not a set price- in my opinion this value should continue to rise indefinitely.

Not only are chairs like this a smart financial investment but they’re one of the best environmentally-friendly furniture investments you can make. They’ve evaded landfill for about 45 years and if looked after should last forever.
