Provenance and Background Info
(This set of 6 chairs sold through iNVISeDGE for $2200 back in 2013. Today in 2018 if I got the exact same set of chairs I’d price them at around $2700. They’re stunning and REALLY HARD to get in a SET OF 6!)
(Description written in 2013. Some information (especially values) will be time-sensitive.)
Some of the most sophisticated chairs you’ll ever see. This SET OF SIX (6) Juliane chairs by Johannes Andersen are the epitome of refined cultured design. I normally cringe when I read this about chairs but I have to say it- they are incredibly sensual pieces. The workmanship (By Uldum Mobelfabrik, Denmark) is superb and you can’t help staring at them. Johannes Andersen became one of the most notable furniture makers of the 1950’s, selling his designs to Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
It took me a long time to find values for these chairs. From what I can see there are no Juliane chairs for sale in the USA at the moment and I only found a couple of sets in Europe. Many dealers are proud to have these in their SOLD inventory but virtually all the sets on-line worldwide are sold. I have seen very few of these chairs in Australia in the 10 years I’ve been in this business and none for a long time. In Europe there are two sets of FOUR for sale that have prices. One set is 1590 EURO (AUD 2365) and the other is 14, 000 SEK (AUD 2340). These prices are for FOUR- a set of six of these vintage chairs would therefore be valued at about $4000 in Europe. These were made in Europe so obviously here in Australia they’re worth more. My price is exceptional buying and if you’re in Brisbane this is an opportunity you probably won’t come across again.
These chairs make a fantastic investment. Being vintage and having stood the test of time, the workmanship and quality are assured. With normal use they will last for centuries to come. This is why they’re an investment. And to top it off they are a comfortable chair- various Danish designed chairs are not. These are nice to sit in.
All the joints are solid and strong with absolutely NO movement. This is because they use an unusual interlocking mechanism at the corners. When the wood button is removed, the joint can be tightened with an allen key. The wood buttons are normally damaged when getting them out but replacing a timber button is much easier than having chair joints re-glued. The timber backs are another great aspect of the design- this is very practical as these backs are hard to damage and easy to keep clean (great for a family).
Chairs in this style have increased in value over the years and whilst many modern chairs end up at the dump within years, this vintage suite is being passed onto yet another household but this time on the other side of the world. Good design and honest workmanship is timeless. If you look after these chairs there’s no reason why they won’t reward you in many ways for many years to come. There are very few better ways of investing in your home and reduce landfill.
