Background Info and Provenance
(This piece sold through iNVISeDGE in 2008 for $1400. If I got the exact same piece today (in 2019) I’d price it at a decent bit more. I’ve pasted the description I wrote back in 2008 below- I’d certainly write it much differently today. I no longer think the design is Australian but was possibly done by De Sede of Switzerland in the 1970’s. I believe this is the DS-2011 ‘Love Seat’. To my eyes the piece illustrates the quality and craftsmanship of the highly celebrated Swiss manufacturer, De Sede.
The description below was written in 2009.
Incredible design is the first thing that comes to mind when I see this piece. This LEATHER 2-seater lounge was probably designed in Australia in the 1970’s in response to the “Coronado Sofa” a highly successful release by B & B Italia of Italy. The equivalent B & B Italia piece would be valued at about $3800 today. I have no qualms stating that I believe this design is even better than the B & B Italia Coronado. This piece has a stunning curvaceous shape, more fluid and less “boxy” compared to the famed B & B design. The clear space under the seat is a mark of genius- it creates a lighter, leaner looking piece so it won’t dominate your space. If you’re looking for a lounge that will be displayed front on, I doubt you’ll find anything that is visually more pleasing and interesting… And the best part- it’s super comfortable!- really nice to sit in (it has suspended springs under the seats) and it’s padded in the right places to make lying on it a pleasure also. Additionally, this lounge is very durable- it has a steel sub-structure and this leather is as high in quality as anything you’ll find in the shops plus I can claim with certainty it was built to last- just look at its condition about 30 years on! (I bought two of these sofas together- the last one sold within days to a happy customer in Melbourne.) I doubt you’ll see another like it for some time to come.
