Provenance and Background Info
(Description was written in 2014.)
A PAIR of Westnofa “Siesta” chairs designed by Ingmar Relling of Norway (early 1970’s). This design is similar to the Norwegian Falcon chair from the same era. The Falcon chair is probably the most famous design to come out of the 70’s and has won a swarm of awards over the years. This design from the same period strongly competes with the Falcon- most would say it sits alongside the Falcon. I love the leanness and simplicity of the styling. The “Siesta” is the epitome of minimalist design but with its sweeping lines it’s still certainly noticed. The angles and proportions are also as good as you’ll find in any chair. The Falcon can be a little “fussy” so it needs plenty of space to “breathe” and be properly appreciated. If you have a smaller space, the “Siesta” is a better choice space or if you simply love minimalist styling with a liberal splash of personality.
This pair is a great investment. They’ve been “on the way up” in value for about 20 years now. There’s currently a pair on 1st Dibs for $US2850 the pair (over 3000 in AUD). “Siesta” chairs have made their way into the history books and the vintage originals should only become more valuable as time goes on.
I love the quality of the construction the most out of everything. This is the highest quality leather- look at it 40 years on! Leather is difficult to buy these days because the cheap and nasty “leathers” have been around for about 20 years now. Shops call it leather- I don’t know what to call it- it disintegrates in years. For these vintage Norwegian chairs, the quality of the leather is indisputable- after 40 years of use it still looks and feels beautiful. These are solid, sturdy chairs that have been built to last (and have already proven themselves!)
And to top it off the comfort is sensational. The angles are perfect and you’re well supported in these chairs.
You can spend $12 000 or more on a pair of feature chairs in this size from SPACE furniture. These are just as exclusive because they’re almost impossible to get. This is first Westnofa Siesta chair I’ve seen to stock in about 5 years (and I come across a LOT of furniture!).
One chair has the full original Westnofa label underneath and the other has a partial label guaranteeing the age. When investing in vintage furniture you have the security of knowing the item will last. Vintage items are not only a smart financial investment (good vintage design often increases in value over time) but it’s also the best investment you can make for the future of our planet. In this throw-away society there are some things that remind us of how things should be. Timeless design and honest workmanship is our only way forward. If you invest in this pair, look after them and decide to re-sell years later, approach me, I’d be very happy to represent them again.
