Description
(The first part of this description was written in 2006 when these chairs sold (for $1500 for 6). The second part was written in 2018. I’d price this exact set of 6 at about $1500 again in 2018.)
Background Info and Provenance
This very rare SET OF 6 Casala fibreglass chairs has a classic design that would complement a modern or art-deco style area perfectly. To get a set of 6 chairs in the BEIGE tone, all in the original state and such great condition too is basically impossible. Casala chairs are hot at the moment and prices should only increase as owners hold their sets for years. The reasons for the popularity of Casala chairs …
- the Casala chair is very comfortable (more comfortable than the Panton chair)
- Casala chairs stack easily so they can be put away when not required
- vintage Casala chairs are TOP QUALITY- modern chairs in similar styles are in cheap plastics that are more prone to breaking (particularly if used out in the weather … and these are outdoor chairs after all!)
- the Casala chair is rare on a worldwide platform giving them very strong investment appeal
- the price is affordable- fibreglass Panton chairs at SPACE furniture cost $1500 EACH. This means this set of chairs should be valued new at about $9000 as well.
I have heaps of fun photographing Casala chairs- they’re striking from any angle and look just as sensational in person. I’ve seen Casala chairs in an inner city bar with lights of different colours shining on them and they looked brilliant. Designed in the 1960’s in Germany, the Casala chair has a stunning shape that still looks “cutting edge” today. I have not seen a matching set of 6 of these chairs for ages- occasionally I see odd numbers and most descriptions state that the chairs are discoloured and weathered and should clean up- this is misleading. We have done a lot of work with Casalas and know that 85% of Casalas that are weathered and dirty can not be cleaned back. It’s near impossible to get a vintage set of 6 that are in original condition, clean and VERY presentable. EACH chair in this set had the vintage “Casala” embossed label on the back and was constructed from fibreglass so they were going to last for many years to come. This is a great investment- if used inside or in an under-covered area these chairs will look like this for a lifetime. ANY PICTURED TABLES ARE NOT INCLUDED BUT AVAILABLE SEPARATELY IN iNVISeDGE.
2018 Update
I’ve not seen many sets of 6 vintage Casala chairs around in great condition over the years. I sold these chairs BEFORE replica furniture flooded the market and I got $1500 for this set of 6. These days (despite replicas in similar styles I’d price them at about $1500 again- probably a bit more though). This is a special set because of the beige colour- it’s a great colour to match in with many spaces. The “earthiness” of this tone means they look amazing with a timber table. I doubt they’ll ever do replicas in beige PLUS the originals will always fetch more than replicas anyway because the quality is irrefutable- look at these after 40+ years of use! Similar replicas cost more than this but they’re made in China where cutting corners is the only thing you can really rely on. (They use cheaper plastics that break easier.) Buying vintage furniture is a great investment (it nearly always increases in value if you buy smartly) plus by investing in items built to last you’re reducing landfill and doing your bit for the environment. AND by buying used furniture found in Australia you’re supporting the Australian economy and Aussie small businesses just like iNVISeDGE!
