Provenance and Background Info

An incredible VINTAGE DANISH table that can be used in 6 ways. These tables were designed in Denmark in the 1960’s by Kai Kristiansen and have become known as the “Metamorphic Table” and also the “Elevator Table”. Incredibly this table elevates in height from coffee table height to dining table height in just seconds. You simply lift up the top and the end levers automatically increase in height after the weight has been taken off them. To decline, simply slide the levers inwards. It’s dead-easy to use and a joy to have around. This table can be used as a coffee table and then if you need a second dining table for the kids or if you’re in a tiny apartment and don’t have space for a dining suite it’d be really handy. What I love about this design is that the extension pieces pull out from the sides (not from each end which is traditionally how dining tables are extended.) This is really smart because it allows this table to be set up as a narrow hall table up against a wall (taking up virtually no floor space) and then it can be extended to become a dining table without having to move it.

I’m reluctantly selling this piece. I’m pretty sure my next real estate project will be re-designing a tiny inner-city studio apartment and this would be perfect in a space like this. I’d have it up against a wall with one side leaf permanently out and one chair in front and then a chair at each end. The chances of finding another in Australia if I decide I want one is next to zero- particularly at this price. I’ve seen them priced at up to AU $2500 in America on 1stdibs! (See the screenshot in this listing.) Every table in this design I’ve ever seen is European so very few have found their way here- they’re RARELY seen in Australia (the last one I had was back in 2008!)

I believe this piece could be by Kai Kristiansen- his Elevator Tables are not labelled and neither is this one. The piece boasts SUPERIOR construction qualities that EXCEED Australia’s Parker and FLER Furniture (both highly regarded). It came out of a deceased estate- the lady emigrated to Australia from Denmark in the early 1980’s and bought all her furniture with her (keep following our NEWLY LISTED Category as there will be more from this home in coming weeks). All our items will always be listed on own website FIRST.

Buying vintage is such a smart way to go. Good vintage design increases in value over the years and if a table can look like this after more than 45 years of use, you’re assured of the quality you’ll be getting before you even fork out a cent. Many modern pieces end up as landfill within years but this 45-year-old piece is ready to be used by a whole new generation- bravo to vintage items!

This table is in excellent condition. It is very solidly constructed and there is no damage or movement to the structure of the piece at all. It shows exceptional construction techniques and is structurally brilliant. It has NO old repairs, NO cracks around the joints, NO movement etc. The top surface is in excellent condition overall for a table that’s about 45 years old and fully original. One extension flap has minor signs of use- see the photos but otherwise there's nothing at all worth noting. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements. 144cm long x 56cm high (lowered) / 68.5cm high (raised) x 55cm wide (closed) / 89cm wide (extended). ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Read my 1200+ ebay feedback comments (ALL for vintage furniture and decorative arts SALES- most are for furniture) to be assured that all the items I sell are in excellent condition and described as accurately as I can.
