(The listed price is for the sofa only. The 2-seater sofa sold through iNVISeDGE for $795 back in 2014. Today in 2019 I’d price the exact same sofa at $1400 at least- this design is virtually irreplaceable!)

Provenance and Background Info

A 2-seater lounge sofa by Poltrona Frau. Poltrona Frau is a high-end Italian manufacturer that was stocked by SPACE Furniture a few years back. It belongs to the same stable as Cassina- Poltrona Frau came first, then Cassina and Cappellini. Poltrona Frau also ranks up there with B & B Italia and Poliform. This is vintage Poltrona Frau from the early 1980’s. A friend who is learning photography with iNVISeDGE was surprised to hear it was a 1980’s piece, he thought it was modern. That’s what I love about it. I realised it was 80’s the second I came across it but the design is so classic you could put it on the floor of SPACE Furniture today and it would hold its own.

Because it’s 1980’s you won’t find it again. It was never stocked in Australia. This piece was bought across to Australia by the Yugoslav embassy in the early 1980’s. They changed premises from South Yarra, Melbourne in the 1990’s which was when it was acquired by the owner I got it from. That company did corporate counselling so these chairs (this listing is for the 2-seater sofa ONLY) were sat in for hours in a corporate situation. This company consolidated their offices to one Sydney office about 10 years back and instead of keeping their Sydney suite they chose to have this Poltrona Frau suite freighted up from Melbourne.

I can see why they kept this suite. I come across a lot of furniture in this job and this suite stood apart immediately. The comfort is exceptional. The construction is exceptional. The quality of the leather is exceptional. Many NEW leathers are not the same anymore. I don’t know how they “make leather” these days but a lot of it disintegrates in years. This obviously won’t and proof of that is in the condition of this suite over 30 years on. Being Poltrona Frau, all the pieces are heavy, rock-solid and strong. With normal use this suite will last another lifetime or more.

The beauty of owning vintage items is that you won’t see the same item around everywhere but beyond that the quality is assured. I cleaned this up a bit- that’s it. If you ever need a change in the future, approach me, I’d be happy to represent this suite again. Vintage furniture that stands apart in terms of both durability and design is one of the best financial furniture investments you can make for your home but beyond that buying items that have been built to last is the best way you can reduce your carbon footprint and help the future of our environment.
