Provenance and Background Info
I sold this set of vintage chairs by Parker Furniture through iNVISeDGE back in 2007 but the customer came back about 9 months later to say they were uncomfortable and wanted me to re-sell them for him. I sold them outside of iNVISeDGE for him and haven’t stocked this design since. I agree with him- the comfort of these isn’t the best. They’re not as comfortable as the highly-sought after Spadeback chair (also by Parker)- I figure that if you’re going to invest this amount of money in vintage chairs you might as well get chairs that tick every box including comfort. The Spadeback chairs by Parker are certainly better in comfort compared to this design. There are a lot of dining chairs on the market more comfortable than the Spadeback too.
This design (which is commonly called the “Railback”) was released by Parker Furniture in the mid-1960’s and is still an excellent chair though. It shows the superior construction qualities that Parker Furniture is renowned for and also looks stunning. These Parker chairs draw strong cues from Danish furniture with a sculptural refined essence that draws you in. I don’t value this design as highly as the Parker Spadeback though, so these days (in 2019) I’d stock this design for around $1900 for 6 (but I haven’t been able to get them to make re-selling them at that price worth my while since 2007). Other people must value them higher than I do.
This Railback design is well-made and I’ve never seen one broken so they’re still a solid investment and will be telling stories for generations to come. Buying quality vintage design is the best way I can think of to reduce landfill and your carbon footprint.
