Provenance and Background Info

This suite of chairs epitomises exactly why I’m so in love with Pacific Green Furniture. The quality of these chairs has been tried and tested with this set- these chairs came out of BUSY inner-city cafe. There were used and abused by cafe patrons for 6 YEARS … and look at them! Structurally they are ALL as solid as a rock- as sturdy as the day they left the Pacific Green factory! That’s no exaggeration.

Patrons in cafes don’t care what they do to the chairs- staff throw them around just as much- they need to get them back where they should be to finish up and go home! After 6 years use in a cafe, these chairs are in BRILLIANT condition- the majority of cafe chairs would end up as landfill. In this business I’ve seen that time and time again. But here the cafe owners have invested wisely- they got the full tax depreciation benefits of the chairs- they’d got the FULL VALUE of the chairs back in tax deductions PLUS we happily PAID THEM for the best 16 chairs- we also came to them and took the chairs away. We admittedly had to use our time and expertise cleaning them up- but that’s all they needed- a bloody good clean. Every chair in this cafe was still as SOLID AS A ROCK and after seeing the amount of use they had when these chairs came in I have no doubt these chairs will last FOREVER. Saying that these chairs will last a generation is not being honest- I can’t see how they could break- unless you threw them out a window of a 3-storey building! Or set fire them! And if want to do that to these amazing chairs you’re insane.

The only thing I’m kicking myself about is that I only bought 16 of them- I should have taken out another storage unit and bought the lot- I’m still learning in this business! 16 is all I could possibly put anywhere at the time I got them but alas I’m not a complete idiot- my client base is basically all private households. I think 16 dining chairs is the most a household could possibly take. This is the real attraction of the suite on offer- I’ve never had more than FOUR Pacific Green cafe chairs in the past. Most of these are sold by Pacific Green as sets of 4 with a circular table (see my other listings). I doubt you’ll find 16 again- we only got them because the cafe called us to say they had to sell them as new chairs were on there way. I’d say most cafe owners don’t get 6 years of use out of their chairs … they would have to turf them into landfill before they even get to enjoy the full tax benefits. These ex-cafe chairs are still ready for a lifetime of use and enjoyment.

And they are a joy to behold. The craftsmanship ALL DONE BY HAND is an absolute joy. The COMFORT is an absolute joy- they’re padded and extremely comfortable. I don’t understand these cafes that have the most uncomfortable chairs you can get- don’t you want your patrons to stay longer and spend more money? Don’t you (as a buyer for your home) want dining chairs that your guests actually want to sit in where the wine and conversation will flow longer? You not only get all that with these chairs but you also get investment appeal as well. If you look after these chairs I’d sell them again for the same price in the future if not more- you just can’t readily buy chairs of this quality these days (and that’s exactly the problem with this world at the moment- just chuck in ’em landfill- in the ocean- she’ll be right mate- use them up- trash them- and get rid of them so you never have to think about them again! …)

These chairs retail NEW for $966 EACH- a set of 16 retails close to $15 000- if you buy the lot of these you’re saving about $10 000 on retail … it’s not as if you have much chance plucking 16 from anywhere else as well!

I think that pretty much sums it up … but that’s just half of it. Read the description below for the real reasons I love Pacific Green so much. Thank you Pacific Green for doing what is desperately needed today but 40 years BEFORE anyone else started doing it.

More information about Pacific Green (if you’ve read this far … keep reading about this fabulous AUSTRALIAN business!)

Pacific Green is one of the most inspiring brands in the world. It’s an Australian brand with humble beginnings starting back in the early 1970’s. Today in 2018, nearly 50 years on, Pacific Green is one of the most coveted furniture brands not only in Australia but the world. Pacific Green items in the US often sell for DOUBLE what they sell for here. I’ve been dealing in pre-loved furniture for 19 years now- it takes a lot for anything to stand out to me these days but Pacific Green without a doubt is exceptional in every regard. I specialise in finding items found in Australia- I don’t go overseas and fill up containers to bring here. We have so much inspiring stuff here in Australia there’s no need to. In my years in this business I believe Pacific Green is the best furniture brand to ever come out of Australia. Tessa and FLER is close (but Tessa/FLER items tended to mimic what was done overseas at the time). Pacific Green does its own thing- their designs are distinctive, interesting, earthy, creative and certainly have “wow factor”. But stunning design is a small part of the appeal. The quality is exceptional. The CRAFTSMANSHIP BY HAND is exceptional. The ethos of Pacific Green is exceptional.

Put one of these chairs next to a Parker dining chair from the 1960’s (the ones people are paying up to $650 EACH for these days) and there’s NO comparison (and Parker chairs are extremely good). These chairs are HEAVY & been built to last forever. Not just one generation- if they’re looked after with some sense I see no reason why these chairs won’t last generations. They’ve HEAVY, solidly built and the eye for construction detail is not what I’ve ever come across before. You want a really strong furniture investment? Pacific Green could be it. And at the price I’ve put on these … Pacific Green couldn’t even make this suite for that!

What else has Pacific Green going for it? Pacific Green uses coconut timber for the manufacture of all their furniture. Coconut wood is a SOLID HARDWOOD- more resilient than virtually any timber- it thrives in areas battered by tropical cyclones. Pacific Green use abandoned plantations of coconut palm trees in the South Pacific that were commercially planted in the early-1900s but reached the end of productive fruiting. Instead of going to waste Pacific Green uses this valuable SUSTAINABLE resource.

But the best part in my eyes is that Pacific Green have set a benchmark for modern, sustainable business for other businesses to follow. In the late 1980’s land was leased, not bought, to respect indigenous ownership. Their factory was built in consultation with surrounding villages and employed only local people. Business and skills training programmes were established. The majority of the company is OWNED BY FIJIANS- the drive of the business is still Australian- the designing arm happens here in Australia.

I am inspired and heartened that a small Australian business changed tack the way they did back in the late 1980’s when ecological threats and socially-conscious business was barely ever thought of.

Right … I must talk about the actual chairs on offer here- called the “Mauritius Café Chair”. (Sorry for such a long-winded affair but the Pacific Green story needs to be told.) The thing is the design and construction quality sells itself. JUST LOOK AT THE PHOTOS! Pacific Green is not a flash in the pan- they earned their reputation long ago for furniture craftsmanship of the highest quality. The suite on offer in this listing is about 20 years old. It’s HAND-CRAFTED- a dying art but one that needs to be nurtured. You can see from the photos these chairs have also considered comfort. Notice the curve and padding in the backs to cradle you- notice the generous seat pad on these as well.

I love scouting to find exciting furniture. Furniture like this is the reason I do this job. Pacific Green ignites inspiration- PG ticks every box and proves that businesses can be successful, ecologically responsible and socially-aware. Their furniture has been built to last and will continue to tell stories well after you and I are gone- just like Post & Rail furniture already has. Pacific Green Furniture will be the antiques of tomorrow. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

EVERY chair is solid and sturdy with no structural defects AT ALL. NO weakness in any joint- that's because there aren't any "real" joints- the timber is clad onto a solid steel sub-structure. The timber has been given a bloody-good clean- it may have minor signs of use but nothing that's unsightly. The leather is FULL-GRAIN quality leather and in excellent condition overall. The white leather presents very well overall- we had to tidy up a few scuffs and minor signs of use to the white colour but FULL-GRAIN leather is resilient- the white leather has NO cracking, NO splitting, NO cuts, NO unsightly signs of use- it's not new but presents very well though because it's FULL-GRAIN leather. The seat leather is ANILINE leather. This leather has been chosen to show use and character over time. ANILINE leather is NOT painted- its the full hide that has been dyed only and remains unfinished. I debated whether this was a good choice for cafe chairs but only for a little while- look at them- I like them as they are. I think the aniline leather gives them rustic character. Aniline leather is also very resilient (IF YOU KEEP IT CONDITIONED) as it's also FULL-GRAIN leather and is less processed. It is designed to show usage marks such as creases, colour inconsistencies etc over time from use. I think the signs of use on these chairs add to the tribal charm of the set. The seat pads give these chairs extra character and tie in with the rustic tribal feel of the design. This mix of rustic charm with a designer slant really works in my eyes. These chairs would settle nicely in many interiors- they're not completely eye-catching though- there's a refined elegance to them too. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ There's some chipping to the chair-leg ends / tips, near the floor which is not noticed- this obviously doesn't affect those chairs structurally at all. Apart from that they may show expected signs of use- some of the aniline seat pads show more use than others (but NO abuse!). Nothing stands out though- nothing ruins the overall presentation of the suite. The chairs are NOT new but ready to be used, enjoyed and proudly displayed in your home. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements. Width 48cm x Depth 45cm x Height 88cm. Seat height slopes slightly from 47cm high at the front to 43.5cm at the back for extra comfort! These are extremely comfortable for dining chairs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Read my 1100+ ebay feedback comments spanning 17+ years (ALL for vintage furniture and decorative arts SALES) to be assured that all my items are described as accurately as I can.
