Description

The price of $1,295 is for the 4 chairs only. The table is priced separately. Priority will be given to those buyers who’d like to purchase the chairs with the matching table. The table looks like an original to me and is of high-quality construction but has no label so is priced at only $450. It’s a good table but without the label we haven’t priced it as an original. It could well be, I don’t know. The chairs all have FRITZ HANSEN labels (from 1995).

LOCATION- being sold under consignment by a private seller in Bondi Junction, SYDNEY, but can be sent via furniture freight Australia-wide. These chairs are stackable so it’d cost about $150 to get all 4 chairs to Melbourne.

Provenance and Background Info

A set of 4 VINTAGE Fritz Hansen Series 7 chairs, made in Denmark and designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955. (When you really think about the fact that these were designed in 1955, you quickly realise that this design is an extraordinary feat.) This set is some of the earliest I’ve come across. Each chair has a label to show they were made in 1995. They have been in non-stop production ever since they were first released in 1955.

The Series 7 chair by Arne Jacobsen is one of the best designed chairs of all time- they’re an incredibly sophisticated piece of design and I completely understand why they’ve attracted such high accolades. The shape is amazing- they remind me of a Thins potato chip. I love the mix of overt and subtle curves. The subtle curves fit the contours of the body creating a remarkably comfortable chair. The other thing about this design is its durability- look at the condition of these chairs after almost 30 years! (Written- 2024). This is why this design now retails new in Australia for about AU $1,000 PER chair. They are built to last and these chairs prove that. The swarm of replicas (that were popular in the 1990’s) have basically disappeared- my guess is most have ended up as landfill. I saw the backs broken off the copies only years after they were released. Auction centres contained sets where several chairs in the set had structural cracks. These original Fritz Hansen Series 7 chairs have no condition issues.

Because of the superiority of the construction and design, these chairs always fetch solid prices on the secondary market. On an international platform, many second-hand Fritz Hansen Series 7 chairs are priced at over AU$900 EACH (in 2024). Second-hand Series 7 chairs hit the secondary market in Australia very rarely and when they do they are hotly contested (particularly if they’re made in Denmark- Fritz Hansen operations moved offshore to Poland some years ago.)

Good design and honest workmanship is timeless. If you look after these 30-year-old Arne Jacobsen chairs they should retain their value (but will very likely increase in value along with inflation) as you get to use and enjoy them. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

These Fritz Hansen (for Arne Jacobsen) Series 7 chairs are in amazing condition for their age. They have NO cracks, NO breaks, NO structural issues at all. This set of chairs present extremely well. One chair has short scratch on the seat. As our photos show, this is not ordinarily noticed. In two of our photos you can see it. (Use the Magnification tool to inspect these chairs closely. Click on the Magnifying Glass in the top corner of each image, then click on the enlarged image to Supersize it.) The metal legs has some aging (as you'd expect of 30 year-old chairs) but this is not really noticed. The owners polished the legs of one chair and this minor aging all polished off- the other 3 chairs will come up the same if you're searching for something that's almost perfect. One foot stopper is missing- these are a standard size available at all hardware stores. This does not affect the function of the chair. As a set, they present extremely and there's nothing really worth noting- what has been pointed out is for the nit-pickers. They've been priced to sell. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
