These could well be the most stunning dining chairs we’ve ever stocked (in 19 years of trading). LOVE them! These would be perfect in a dining nook or even as an everyday kitchen suite. They tick every box including the durability box. These chairs were made in the 1970’s and look at them- no guessing the quality on offer here. Crafted in Denmark by celebrated furniture maker, Magnus Olesen, this design is possibly the most highly-regarded to ever come out of their workshop. That comment alone shows how esteemed the design is. Magnus Olesen has been crafting quality Danish furniture since the 1950’s collaborating with some of the world’s most respected furniture designers of all time including Ib Kofod-Larsen, Kai Kristiansen, Busk & Hertzog and of course, Rud Thygesen & Johnny Sørensen (who created this design- the Model 5531- back in the 1950’s).
The design of the 5331 takes centre-stage but this has been backed-up with the some of the best craftsmanship ever seen in furniture. Despite serving a couple of generations already, this suite is ready to be passed onto yet another custodian- with the double-railing, every chair is very solid and perfectly sturdy after decades of use and the jute webbing is as durable as it gets. Jute is used to make rope- it’s as tough-as-nails. I love it when furniture-makers use jute. It usually takes decades (centuries ?) to show wear on furniture but also adds a warm earthy slant. With these sweeping architectural curves no-one could deny these are a design sensation but what I love most is the warmness of the look- these chairs have an inviting style. Most designer furniture these days is clinical and sterile looking- this 1950’s design is the opposite. On polished concrete floors, the Birch timber and jute would add a homely feeling to your space. The look is “clean” and minimalist but attention-grabbing all at once.
Durability and looks definitely get a tick but that’s half the charm. INVESTMENT APPEAL gets a huge tick. I’ve never seen this design in Australia ever. There are none in this design I could find for sale here in Australia at the time of writing. The closest Model 5331 chair I found was in New Zealand for $1600- but they had ONLY ONE CHAIR! If they had 4 that’d put their price at AU $6000- but surely a set of 4 would have to be harder to get than just one!
Comfort is also excellent- ergonomics have certainly been carefully considered. The angles are spot-on and the back is a great height. Many Danish dining chairs have very low backs (to accentuate the understated elegance of their designs). This can come at the expense of comfort. This design has a normal height for the back- comfort here has not been compromised at all.
Finally, these chairs get a big tick for the conscious-consuming box. They have already evaded landfill for about 50 years- these chairs are set to last another 50 at least (providing you use them with some sense!) But on top of this Magnus Olesen continuously improve their environmental standards. Most of their recent products have also been FSC® certified. This ensures that the timber they use come from forests where nature and the social conditions at the production site are carefully considered.
The Model 5531 design by Rud Thygesen & Johnny Sørensen, for Magnus Olesen presents great craftsmanship, aesthetics, quality and a rare INVESTMENT opportunity. After most modern dining chairs have ended up as landfill (wasting the world’s resources) this set will be passed on to yet another generation. Timeless design and honest craftsmanship, are our only way out of this mess! On top of this, these chairs are set to increase in value in the future- I’ve not seen this design priced cheaper anywhere worldwide (but in Australia they’re infinitely harder to get). There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
