This suite SOLD under consignment from my vendor’s apartment in Melbourne (inner city Melbourne) for $2800 (4 chairs + matching table).

This listed price ($2000) is OFFERS OVER $2000 for the 4 Featherston Scape Chairs only (the table price is extra- please read the full description before you contact us). These chairs were re-upholstered a few years ago in the very best WOOL upholstery- an English textured wool (our client no longer remembers the brand but only that top-quality wool was used. It’s obvious why upholstery of this quality was chosen- these are one of the best chairs to ever come out of Australia.) I’ve even seen them being sold out of New York and Miami in America for WAYYYY MORE than this.) Featherston Scape dining chairs are the MOST SOUGHT-AFTER dining chair in Australia- they get more buyer enquiries coming through the iNVISeDGE website than any other dining chair design. If you want vintage Scape dining chairs so too does thousands of other people. The last set of authentic VINTAGE Scape chairs I saw for sale was through the iNVISeDGE website about 12 months ago- those chairs sold in the first 2 days of being listed. The middle few photos of the chairs in vinyl (the black /white chairs) are display photos- those chairs sold through the iNVISeDGE website nearly a decade ago (also within days of being listed). 

Offers over $2800 for the full suite (for the Aristoc Scape table AND 4 chairs) will take precedence over offers for only the 4 chairs. Our seller loves his suite and is forced to sell because he’s moving to Europe for work- he doesn’t want to break up the suite. I don’t want to break it up either. The Aristoc badge may be under the black cover under the chairs- we don’t want to unpick the upholstery to find out. These are certainly VINTAGE Scape chairs- even without my vendor’s commentary I am 100% convinced just from the photos. The matching table RETAINS the vintage Aristoc label. (Read the Condition section for further information.)  

If you love this design and want more chairs you could consider buying a second vintage suite like this (when you find one) and put the two circular tables together. You could even put a rectangular marble piece on top of two table-bases (and re-upholster the other 4 chairs in the same upholstery (wool in this colour is easy to get as it’s very much in vogue right now). You’d then have a suite that’s basically irreplaceable. Wool is a natural fibre and the easiest soft-upholstery to keep clean. It can be soaped up with Woolmix. Wool naturally repels stains though so very rarely needs cleaning. This textured-wool is a particularly good choice for these sleek stylish frames (they offer an interesting contrast.)

Another option is getting the other 4 chairs MADE TO ORDER by Gordon Mather Industries (through Grazia & Co). Gordon Mather Industries has the license from Grant and Mary Featherston to produce new Scape chairs to the exact standard of the vintage originals from 1960. (The Grazia and Co chairs are not replicas but licensed originals.)

Provenance and Background Info

A set of 4 VINTAGE Scape dining chairs designed by Grant Featherston in 1960. Grant Featherston is arguably the most celebrated Australian furniture designer of all time (it’s either him or Fred Lowen). His designs spanned 3 -4 decades and his versatility and talent as a designer is obvious when you peruse the huge body of work he has left us. The Scape designs produced by Aristoc in the 1960’s through to the 70’s are the most sought-after of all his metal designs.

Visually the Scape chair is captivating but the triumph of this design goes well beyond that. This is a very COMFORTABLE and DURABLE chair. In the 19 years I’ve been in this business I’ve never seen a Scape chair broken- they’re almost indestructible. This is great news for buyers with families and collectors- Scape chairs are a practical investment that can be used while they reap rewards financially. Most modern dining chairs will lose hundreds or thousands of dollars the second you sit on them- with these, the longer you use them (and look after them) the more chance they’ll increase in value. Scape lounge chairs are part of the collection of the Powerhouse Museum. A Featherston contour chair in my collection recently sold for thousands of dollars more than what I paid for it at a Sydney auction 14 years ago- this is while I got to enjoy using it and having it in my home.

In my opinion the Scape design is one of the best in Australian furniture history- I like Scape chairs more than Featherston’s contour chairs because the Scape design is so unique in style. If you trawl the world of furniture design you won’t see anything quite like it.

After modern dining chairs have ended up as landfill, these 60 year old chairs will be passed onto yet another generation to enjoy. There are very few better ways to invest in your home from a financial perspective and in the future of our planet.

These chairs are in brilliant condition for chairs that have been used for 60-odd years. Structurally they are all solid and sturdy. There are NO old repairs, NO breakage and NO cracks around any joint. They have been made to last generations. The metal is heavy (excuse the cringe-worthy pun!)- they’re very solid chairs. The frames have no noticeable dents but various small scuffs and marks to the finish (as shown in the close-up pics). These minor signs of use do NOT adversely affect the value (or look) of this suite and in fact enhance the investment appeal and vintage character. (These signs of use authenticate that this is a genuine vintage suite and not an re-issue from Gordon Mather Industries.) All the original foot stoppers are in place which is brilliant because if they're not you're likely need to need something specifically engineered to fit on the bottom of the leg. Re-upholstery is not an option with these chairs. They were purchased from a reputable Melbourne vintage furniture dealer in 2017- the re-upholstery was organised by this dealer. The suite has basically been only used as a display suite since then. My vendor loves the design and has travelled a lot internationally for work so has rarely been at home- he catches up with friends out, not at home- this suite has very rarely been used since the chairs were re-upholstered. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ The table has minor signs of use and a couple of very small rusts mark in the original laminate (from a metal ornament being placed in the centre of the table.) The table top also has some very feint shadow marks from use over the last 60 or so years but nothing that ruins the look of the suite. 1 or 2 of the screws on the backs of each chair is missing. This is normal with vintage Scape chairs. The backs of the chairs are secure without all the screws (I've seen this many times before with vintage Scape chairs- not all the screws are needed.) One of the chair backs is a little loose but still secure. The vendor attempted to tighten the screws on that chair but to no avail as it seems some of the screw threads have "lost their grab" over time. I'd say you'd be able to try some of the screws in different holes as there are a few points to secure the backs onto the upright posts. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The last set of Scape chairs iNVISeDGE had measured ... 48cm across by 58cm back. Total height- 79cm. Seat height- 46.5cm. This suite is being sold from my client's location in Melbourne City. Interstate freight is available.
