Background Info and Provenance

(The first part of this description was written in 2006 when these chairs were sold. The second part in 2018. I’d price this set at MORE than $1600 in 2018, maybe around $1750 – $1800.)

A design classic that will be popular forever. In my opinion the Casala chair is near the top of quality design. Launched in the mid 1970’s in Germany by Alexander Begge, the Casala chair looks cutting edge even by today’s standards- imagine the sensation they caused when this design was released! This chair is ultra comfortable, has armrests for extra comfort but is not big and cumbersome- the Casala chair even stacks when you need extra space! Casalas can also be used inside or out (I’ve had past customers buy these chairs to use in a small apartment to move between the inside area and balcony). Practicalities aside, these chairs look stunning. From the photos you can see that the Casala chair looks great from basically every angle. This set has the VINTAGE Casala tag and registered design number on the back which gives them very solid investment appeal.

A set of 6 like this in brilliant ORIGINAL condition is a rare find and a smart investment. Casalas in chocolate brown are particularly rare (this is the first set I’ve ever seen) and would look great in a variety of contemporary settings with various dining tables particularly a timber table.

2018 Update

I’ve not seen a set of 6 Casala chairs in chocolate since this set that I sold back in 2006 so they’re ridiculously rare. They’re brilliant to match in with a timber table. I sold these before replica furniture flooded the market and got $1600 the set for them. These days (despite replicas in similar styles I’d price them at a bit more than this). This is a special set because of the colour- it’s a great colour to match in with any space. The earthiness of the colour contrasting with this space-age shape is an intriguing contrast- with any timber timber they’d look amazing! I doubt they’ll ever do replicas in chocolate again PLUS the originals will always fetch more than replicas anyway because the quality is irrefutable- look at these after 30+ years of use! The replicas cost more than this but they’re made in China where cutting corners is the only thing you can rely on. Buying vintage furniture is a great investment (it nearly always increases in value if you buy smartly) plus by investing in items built to last you’re reducing landfill and doing you’re bit for the environment. AND  supporting Aussie small businesses just like mine!
