This set of 6 vintage 1960’s dining chairs are being sold under consignment from Prahran, MELBOURNE. They’re being sold by a regular seller of vintage furniture. I personally worked with these chairs and checked every chair very carefully. This set can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable additional fee (about $240 to freight all 6 to Sydney).
Provenance and Background Info

A set of SIX sculptural vintage dining chairs that are most likely DANISH. I’d be very surprised to hear they were made in Australia. I’ve been working in with vintage Australian furniture for 21 years and have never come across these chairs before. This set was made BY HAND, most likely early 1960’s. They’re BETTER than virtually any Australian dining chair with this look. The backs are SOLID TIMBER. Parker dining chairs with a similar design have plywood backs with a timber veneer finish- the veneer on the backs can and does lift, bubble, chip-off and crack. That will never happen with these chairs. And the other good thing about these is that the timber backs look like they could be Rosewood. I’m not sure as I’m no biologist (!) but the patterning in the timber is STUNNING and reminds me of vintage Rosewood chairs I’ve had in the past (that sold for a mint!)
The other thing I like about these chairs is the COMFORT. They support your back in exactly the right place and the subtle curve in the back further enhances the comfort as do the padded seats. These are some of the best chairs from the 1960’s with the Danish design aesthetic we’ve ever had.
The last set of chairs in this style we had was about 18 months ago (they sold within 2 days of being listed)- miss these and you could be waiting another 18 months. They don’t come up much anymore. (After over 20 years in this business, I love this design just as much as the first time I came across chairs in the same style, probably even more.)
These vintage dining chairs are at the height of sculptural elegance. The refined sophistication appears simple but when you look closely you realize the craftsmanship is not that easy at all.
I have carefully checked over every chair and I guarantee (here in writing) that all 6 chairs have NO noticeable movement in any joint and NO issue that affects the structural integrity of any chair at all. After about 50 or 60 years of use EVERY chair is solid and sturdy.
These chairs also offer solid investment appeal. I recently saw similar TH Brown and Sons chairs priced at $700 EACH in an upmarket Melbourne store- I like these just as much as the TH Brown ones. At this price the investment appeal is a no-brainer! These have brilliant mid-century modern craftsmanship at a price you won’t see again in other mid-century stores.
Vintage chairs from the 1960’s with the Danish design aesthetic can sell for $4200 for sets of 6 like this by experienced dealers- written 2023. And values for chairs like these CONSTANTLY go up- I’ve seen this first hand over the last 22 years. Many modern dining chairs end up at as landfill within years but when sets of vintage chairs look like this after 60 years of use, buyers have full confidence of the quality they’re investing in before they even shell out a cent. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
