Provenance and Background Info
(Written in early 2019)
A set of 6 Varna Swivel dining chairs designed by Grant Featherston in 1966 (produced by Aristoc Industries). To say that a set of SIX (6) of these chairs is rare is an understatement. Sets of 4 are “exceptionally rare” – these are not my words but how they’re described online by collectors and dealers. In 17 years of trading I’ve not seen a set of 6 of these ever- not even in photos. Featherston is without a doubt one of the most celebrated designers to ever come out of Australia- most would argue he is the most celebrated. His designs are held in important collections in Australia and abroad.
The plethora of designs he created and the way he constantly came out with fresh ideas floors me. The Varna design fits in that domain. In 1960 he released the Scape designs- something that hadn’t been seen in Australia before. In came the Varna in 1966- again pushing Australian furniture in a new direction. (Perhaps well before its time for Australia because very few of these chairs were sold back in the 60’s.) Featherston built upon the popular Eames’ aluminum group chairs that came out about 10 years before. I say ‘built upon’ because, to my eyes, the styling is more sophisticated- the base of the Varna is also aluminum but more sculptural and refined. The comfort is also at least as good as Eames aluminum group chairs that are used in the most discerning offices world-wide.
These chairs have been reupholstered in PREMIUM-QUALITY white vinyl that looks and feels like leather. (There are cheap vinyls around and if it was cheap I would say so- this is NOT vinyl- they were reupholstered about 12 years ago by a previous owner.) I’d say they were re-upholstered only because they were acquired as a set of 4 and then an extra 2 that didn’t match. The table designed for these chairs was circular and fit only 4 chairs. I think white vinyl was the perfect choice. Because they’re dining chairs the vinyl is very easy to clean. White is minimalist and sleek, to match in with the simplicity of the styling. I’d certainly own these myself but I have no need for more furniture so I have to let them go. I live in a small apartment and work at the dining table- these chairs would also be my perfect “desk” chair.
They tick every box. COMFORT, timeless good looks, DURABILITY (you won’t find many dining chairs that hold up any better to use) and obviously design appeal. I’ve never seen a set of 6 of these and Featherston furniture always attracts collectors. I’ve priced them at basically what you’d pay for dining chairs anywhere but they are extremely collectable. When chairs look like this after about 50 years of use the QUALITY is irrefutable and when the design is still noticed for all the right reasons today you know it will be just as valuable in another 50 years! (Most likely much more-so). There are very few better ways to invest in your home and our environment (if any).

These chairs are in excellent condition for chairs that have been used for 50-odd years. Structurally they are all solid and sturdy. I’ve carefully checked every chair. There are NO old repairs, NO creaks, NO breakage and NO cracks around any joint. They have been built to last. The bases are aluminium which is much better than chrome- it doesn’t pit, corrode or rust- the bases will look like this forever. You could polish up the aluminium bases to get them shinier but I don’t think this is unnecessary and these are vintage originals- they shouldn’t look new. The upholstery is about 12 years old and is TOP quality vinyl- it’s thick and hard-wearing and looks like leather (but is a lot more practical than leather for dining chairs). The vinyl has some slight discolouration and minor signs of use but nothing that’s noticed. The chairs all swivel well and the comfort is exceptional. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The only flaw is that the cushioning in the seat of 4 chairs is not quite thick enough. It doesn’t affect the comfort at all but if the cushioning is too thin with virtually any Aristoc chair, the screws that hold the bases to the seat section come up from underneath and may pierce the vinyl. (Normally it happens in Aristoc chairs when the cushioning flattens after decades of use. With these Varna chairs it has happened because the upholsterer that re-upholstered these some time ago didn’t use cushioning that was quite thick enough.) This piercing is about the same size as a pin-prick and there’s about 8 along the front of 4 chairs. The re-upholstery was done at least a decade ago so it can’t get any worse and it’s never really noticed. It’s obviously not noticed when you use them as these screw tips only come up about 1 or 2mm if you’re sitting on the front edge which is basically impossible to do this because the chair then starts toppling forward if you sit on the edge of the seat. The pin-pricks along the front are so small they’re not noticed unless you closely scrutinize the chairs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The chairs have been priced accordingly- these would be priced at about $1895 otherwise- sets of 6 are so RARE! If this ever bothered you, you could lift the upholstery staples on the underside, lift up the vinyl along the top edge, file off the top of the screws and secure the upholstery back down with an upholstery stapler. Voila! Problem fixed. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This would take about half an hour (tops) for each chair – 2 hours total for 4 chairs. $50 an hour is a ridiculously good hourly rate for something so basic = $100 plus the cost of a good upholstery stapler - $30 = $130. I’ve taken off $300 because of this. The pricing takes this minor flaw into account IF you could be bothered fixing it. I personally don’t think I would ever bother. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I would have done this myself but my associate in Melbourne told me it was from cat clawing and anyone else would have just assumed it was but for me I couldn’t work out why the cat only clawed along the exact same area on 4 of the chairs. It took several hours of cleaning the vinyl and photographing the chairs when the penny dropped and I remembered other Aristoc chairs I’d had in the past and the same thing had happened (Scape chairs instead). Don’t use this as a tool to barter. I will tell you to buy these chairs somewhere else! Next time I’m in Melbourne (I live on the Sunshine Coast) I will bring my upholstery stapler down and fix this. It would have already been done if I’d bought my upholstery stapler down last visit (I didn’t want to buy another upholstery stapler just to do one job). Anyone who knows Australian investment furniture should jump at these straight away- they're authentic Featherston chairs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I have used leather putty to putty up the tiny pin-pricks on one chair and have photographed this chair closely. The chair that looks undamaged in the close-up photos, actually has had the pricks puttied. They are now not noticed at all (because they were so tiny to start with)- I have used this chair a lot since doing this but over time the screws will probably come up again and pierce the putty. If you were to file off the screw tips and then putty the pin pricks you’ve got a set of chairs I would have priced at $1895 for 6. Who knows what they could be priced at in the mid-century shops in Melbourne- I think they’re worth at least $400 each, $2400 the set. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The floor protectors on the underside of the star base are no longer present for 2 chairs (and possibly may not have ever been there as I believe these were purchased as a set of 4 and then a set of 2.) This does not affect the function of the chairs AT ALL and is not noticed. If you need floor protectors a trip to Bunnings will get that sorted.
