FULL SUITE SOLD FOR MORE THAN THE OFFERS OVER PRICE. In the FIRST 3 DAYS OF BEING LISTED!

PRICE for this listing- offers over $600 PER chair PLUS $600 for the Scape extension table. Priority will be given to those who would like to buy the full suite including the table. LOCATION-  Warrnambool, West of GEELONG, approx 3 hours out of Melbourne. I travelled to Warrnambool to work with this dining suite so I would know exactly what I’m selling. The suite is in brilliant condition for something that’s over 60 years old.

This is the first set of 6 Scape dining chairs we’ve had with BLACK frames for 4 years. The previous suite we had with black frames only had 4 chairs though. The last time we had six black chairs was 2012. Don’t miss these! The black finish is in excellent vintage condition. I like the look of the frames exactly as they are. The upholstery is okay- it does work very well with the table- easily reupholstered in your choice of fabric or leather. If it was my suite I’d have them reupholstered (probably in white leather) and get a new marble top put on the table base. VINTAGE Scape pieces are highly coveted and getting very hard to get. These are VERY durable pieces- made to last a lifetime (and they already have!) The Featherston Scape dining chair re-issues (made in Australia under license) cost about $1,800 EACH and these are better because they have the steel piece covering the backs (the new ones don’t because it’s cheaper to not put it on).

Call or SMS us on the phone number in our CONTACT section to purchase this vintage suite. I’ve seen Scape chairs priced at a LOT more than this in Australia and also being sold out of New York and Miami in America for THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS MORE.) Featherston Scape dining chairs are some of hardest dining chairs to get in Australia- they get constant buyer enquiries coming through the iNVISeDGE website.

Some of the photos in this listing are display photos showing other Scape suites we’ve sold in the past.

If you love this design and want more chairs you could consider buying a second vintage suite like this and have the upholstery match. Another option is getting other chairs in black MADE TO ORDER by Gordon Mather Industries (through Grazia & Co). Gordon Mather Industries has the license from Grant and Mary Featherston to produce new Scape chairs to the exact specifications as the vintage originals from 1960. (The Grazia and Co chairs are not replicas, they’re licensed originals.)

Provenance and Background Information

(This description was written in 2022 for another set of Featherston Scape chairs we sold in the past.

A set of 6 VINTAGE Scape dining chairs designed by Grant Featherston in 1960. Grant Featherston is arguably the most celebrated Australian furniture designer of all time (it’s either him or Fred Lowen). His designs spanned 3 -4 decades and his versatility and talent as a designer is obvious when you peruse the huge body of work he left us. The Scape designs produced by Aristoc in the 1960’s through to around 1970 are the most sought-after of all his metal designs.

Visually the Scape chair is captivating but the triumph of this design goes well beyond that. This is a very COMFORTABLE and DURABLE dining chair. In the 21 years I’ve been in this business, I’ve never seen a Scape chair broken- they’re almost indestructible. This is great news for buyers with families and collectors- Scape chairs are a practical investment that can be used while they reap rewards financially. Most modern dining chairs will lose hundreds or thousands of dollars the second you sit on them- with these, the longer you use them (and look after them) the more chance they’ll increase in value. Featherston Scape lounge chairs are part of the collection of the Powerhouse Museum. A vintage Featherston contour chair in my collection recently sold for $2,600 more than what I paid for it at a Sydney auction 14 years before- this is while I got to enjoy using it in my home.

In my opinion the Featherston Scape design is one of the best in Australian furniture history- I like Scape chairs more than Featherston’s contour chairs because the Scape design is so unique in style. If you trawl the world of furniture design you won’t see anything quite like it.

After modern dining chairs have ended up as landfill, these 60-year-old Featherston beauties will be passed onto yet another generation to enjoy. There are very few better ways to invest in your home from a financial perspective and in the future of our planet.

These chairs are in brilliant condition for chairs that have been used for 60-odd years. Structurally they are all solid and very sturdy. There is NO structural damage, NO breakage and NO cracks around any joint, NOTHING of the sort. They have been made to last generations. These are heavy metal (! ... excuse my cringe-worthy pun!)- they’re very solid. The frames have no noticeable dents but some minor signs of use to the black finish. The black could be cleaned and polished up for a shinier look (I'd use a Citrus Cleaner to cut through the oil build up from hands handling the tops of the chairs over the least 60 years. This is a consignment item- they are in AS FOUND condition. If they were mine, I would have given them a dam-good clean and polished up the black finish. Study the photos to get an overall picture of the current cosmetic condition keeping in mind that they'd look better if they were cleaned. (The minor signs of use authenticate that this is a genuine vintage suite and not an re-issue from Gordon Mather Industries. The originals are better than the re-issues as they are better made and they also have the metal plates on the back of each chair. This is more expensive to produce and was not done in the later models of the Aristoc chairs or the re-issues either.) The black finish is in better condition than any set of Scape dining chairs I've had in the past- I like the frames exactly as they are and would NOT powder-coat them. These are vintage chairs and I personally wouldn't want them to look brand-new. All the original foot stoppers are in place which is brilliant because if they're not you're likely to need something specifically engineered to fit on the bottom of the leg. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ These chairs were re-upholstered in the early-1990's. The upholstery is in very good condition overall- the chairs present very well as they are, but would benefit from re-upholstery. If I bought them I would use them as they are for a few years and then get them re-upholstered in white leather. The current upholstery looks good overall (as shown in our array of photos. Use the Magnifying Tool to get close and personal with this suite. Click on the magnifying glass in the right upper corner of each image. Then when the photo is enlarged, click on it again to Supersize it.) The upholstery is a little tired- there's no real damage that stands out though. It shows the usual signs of use you'd expect of dining chairs that are 30-odd years old but no abuse. Kids of any age can then use these chairs and you wouldn't have to cringe every time they did! The structure will stand up to any type of use and the current upholstery is perfect if you have kids. When the chairs were re-upholstered about 30 years ago, the original Aristoc plaques were retained for TWO chairs and re-affixed underneath as shown in one of our photos. The metal bracket underneath the chairs that's used to screw the timber seat section onto the frame has been re-welded on 4 chairs. The heat from this has damaged the black finish UNDERNEATH 4 chairs. This can only be noticed if you get on all fours and look underneath the chairs. If you find yourself doing this you either need to get a life or your life in the dining room is much more exciting than mine! ;+) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The condition of the table is extremely good with nothing worth noting. It also retains the original Aristoc badge underneath. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The last set of Scape chairs iNVISeDGE had measured ... 48cm across by 58cm back. Total height- 79cm. Seat height- 46.5cm. I see no reason why these wouldn't be the same. The table measures x cm Width is x cm. Height- x cm.
