Description

These chairs sold for $1740 in 2012. The design is extremely rare. If I got this exact set again (in 2018) I’d price them at more- probably around $2000.

Provenance and Background Info

(Written in 2012)

A set of SIX (6) dining chairs done in the same design as the #42 model by Kai Kristainsen in DENMARK in 1956. These chairs are definitely vintage- made in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s- they certainly have at least 30 years of age to them. Apart from that I know little else about the background of this particular set. They could have been made in Australia- one thing is for sure, the construction quality is exceptional and they’re extremely RARE in Australia.

The #42 model is one of the most coveted dining chair designs in the world. They have a strong international following and are particularly sought-after in Japan, USA and Australia. (They fetch about AU $6000 for a set of 6.) The reason for their popularity is simple. They tick every box as far as a dining chair goes. Comfort, Good Looks, Quality Construction, Investment Appeal and Re-Sale Value.

Form fits function with these chairs- they not only look stunning but are some of the most comfortable dining chairs you’ll ever sit in. The seat back actually tilts at an angle so you can settle into a position most comfortable for you.

To top it off investment appeal is also ticked with this set, they’re extremely well-made. Every joint is solid and strong- the quality of this VINTAGE set is unquestionable when you look at their condition after all these years of use- these chairs are an investment for your home not a purchase.

Many modern chairs are built to end up as landfill within 10 years of using them so you have to go out and buy more. This VINTAGE set in an iconic design boast exceptional workmanship- look at them after 30 or so years of use! There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

These chairs are in excellent condition. Structurally they are all solid and sturdy. I’ve carefully checked every chair- there are NO breaks, NO creaks, NO movement, NO repairs, NO cracks around any joint. They’ve been crafted to last (and have). The internal joints are excellent. The timber is also in great condition- obviously they’ve sustained a few minor marks and dents over the years but nothing that’s noticed. (The timber is hardwood and is naturally this colour. ie there is NOT a lighter coloured timber under a stain.) The velvet upholstery looks like the original fabric (I don’t think they have been re-upholstered). It looks like 1970’s upholstery to me or early 80’s. This fabric is dirty with some minor marks but is a high-quality fabric so is still in very good condition. You could probably get them steam cleaned and I’d say they would come up very well. (The marks just look like dirt.) I would recommend re-upholstery though- this fabric is later than when the chairs were first designed so it doesn’t really fit in with the era. It depends on your décor though. The seats and backs under the upholstery are curved timber- NOT webbing. This style of seat section is much better in quality because webbing needs to be replaced over the years. These chairs each measure 52cm across by 49cm back with a total height of 78cm. The seat height is 46cm. Read my 1150+ ebay feedback comments (ALL for vintage furniture and decorative arts SALES) to be assured that all my items are described as accurately as I can.
