Description

SOLD to Michael & Anna over in Perth in 2019 for $980 for the circular Mitzi table & 6 Mitzi chairs. They paid about $450 on top of this price for delivery across to Perth (from our consignment seller in Bendigo).

The first 10 photos are display photos showing a set of Grant Featherston Mitzi chairs we sold through iNVISeDGE in 2006- the final photos on floorboards show the set of 6 chairs we SOLD under consignment from our client’s home in BENDIGO, 100km or so North of Melbourne.

The vendor of these chairs has just bought a Featherston Scape dining suite. She loves her Mitzi  chairs and wouldn’t be parting with them otherwise. Featherston Scape chairs are currently fetching about TRIPLE this! This set has been priced to sell- it offers a cost-effective alternative to Scape chairs. The price listed here is for all 6 chairs.

This seller also has a circular Mitzi table also available (shown in the 4th last photo) which can be added in for a small additional price. NONE of the other pictured tables are available. The rectangular table she has photographed with her Mitzi chairs is her Featherston Scape table and is not available for sale.

The chairs on offer have the rarer copper-coloured frames- I love this colour on Featherston chairs- and they retain the original “stone” vinyl from the 1960’s too- another plus. This original upholstery would work well in any space. It could also be tidied up by a leather repairer very easily (if that’s your taste).

Provenance and Background Info

Description written in 2019

I think the Mitzi design is way under-valued and offers a very solid investment opportunity. This is a beautiful chair with it’s sinewy lines and lean stylish profile. The Mitzi has all the fun of the 1950’s-era with a good dash of elegant sophistication in the mix… And these chairs are so damn COMFORTABLE. They’re some of the most comfortable dining chairs you’ll ever find. To top it off they’re extremely DURABLE. In the 18 years I’ve been in this business, I’ve never seen anything significant go wrong with Mitzi chairs. They’re now nearing 60 years-old and have held up extremely well with use and time. The padding/cushioning often disintegrates over this number of years (which is no different for this set) but this is an easy and cheap fix ( … if it bothers you- they’re extremely comfortable chairs even without the padding- most people keep on enjoying them as they are). The seats are perfectly curved and the angles are spot on for sitting in for long periods. Read the Condition section for further information.

The Mitzi design is often overlooked but has everything going for it. They’re a very smart investment if you have a family as they hold up extremely well with solid use and are one of those very rare furniture offerings you can confidently use with children that will actually hold it’s value over time (in my opinion sets of 6 Mitzi chairs in neutral tones (or black or orange) should continue to increase along with inflation forever). They’ve increased in value by about 10% since the set I sold back in 2006 and I see no reason why steady gains shouldn’t continue.

After modern dining chairs have ended up as landfill, these 60 year-old Grant Featherston-designed gems will be passed onto yet another generation to enjoy. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

These chairs are about 60 years old so show various signs of use and age however there's no abuse or significant damage that ruins the suite. Every chair (and the table) is structurally solid and sturdy with no structural issues at all. All of the original foot-stoppers are still in place. The vinyl is original and has some small cuts and other minor signs of use- these minor signs of use could be rectified by a leather restorer but if you were to study online you'd be able to fix these small cosmetic issues yourself. It's not a hard job because there are various tones of white/cream/grey in the vinyl. The bronze finish to the metal frames also shows the expected signs of use for chairs of this age. ALL Mitzi / Scape chairs that retain the original metal finish have minor signs of use. Some of this adds to the vintage character of the chairs. The few signs of use that are more noticeable can be touched up. I'd personally go to Bunnings and get a small tin of paint mixed in this exact colour (about $18) and blend small areas where losses of the original finish is more noticed. It is a matter of taste and any chairs that have noticed areas of loss can be displayed around the table in such a way that they're not noticed. The chairs have not been abused (just used and loved) and overall present very well for vintage chairs of this age. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The screws that hold the timber seat-bases onto the steel frames are starting to come up through the vinyl. This is normal in ALL vintage Aristoc chairs- Scape, Mitzi etc. This is caused from the original cushioning perishing over the last 60 years. This can easily be rectified by turning the screws underneath a few turns to bring them down. You'll find that after this is done various small lumps in the vinyl will start to correct on their own. The cushioning is not needed- this design is extremely comfortable as it is. For a Scape / Mitzi suite in fully original condition, the full suite looks excellent set-up.
