This set of 6 chairs are being sold under consignment from the Sandgate / Brighton area in NORTH BRISBANE. These are being sold by a private seller but I personally worked with them and checked every chair over very carefully. This set can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable additional fee (about $220 to freight all 6 to Sydney).
Provenance and Background Info

A set of SIX sculptural dining chairs with Danish influence by the highly-celebrated Australian company TH Brown & Sons. This set was made BY HAND in Adelaide in the early 1960’s. I believe this is a Danish design TH Brown and Sons won the license to produce. From what I read (a long time back so you can’t quote me on this) TH Brown won this license ahead of other Australian furniture firms at the time because the Danish designers had confidence that TH Brown & Sons had the ability of creating the design to the exact same standard as Danish producers.
TH Brown & Sons chairs are favourites of mine but I get these chairs very rarely. There is a multitude of reasons for this which I won’t go into here- the main reason is that they’re RARE. The last time I stocked this design was 2016. Whenever I photograph these chairs there’s a flow I fall in love with all over again. (After 20 years in this business, I love this design just as much as the first time I saw it- probably even more.)
These chairs are at the height of sculptural elegance. The refined sophistication appears simple but when you look closely you realize the craftsmanship is anything but simple. This is furniture craftsmanship at its finest.
I have carefully checked over every chair in this set and guarantee (here in writing) that all 6 chairs NO movement in any joint, NO cracks around any joint and NO issue that affects the structural integrity of any chair at all. After about 50 years of use EVERY chair is rock-solid and sturdy. One of the six chairs, sustained a minor break that was PROFESSIONALLY REPAIRED AT LEAST 10 YEARS AGO- this chair is now as strong as it was when built back in the early-1960’s. It sounds incredible that ALL these chairs are solid and sturdy after about 60 YEARS of use but this is the result of the inner joints being crafted to inter-lock perfectly at every corner. This is rarely done in furniture anymore so you have to keep going out to buy more. (I sold a similar set of these chairs in April 2014 and the customer left a positive feedback on ebay around May 2014. Google, invisedge ebay to read my feedback spanning 20 years.)
This design by TH Brown and Sons is a lot stronger and more durable than virtually every other design in this style. Additionally, the comfort is extremely good (a lot better than similar designs such as the FLER 64)- the back on these is higher and the curve is pronounced which further aids the comfort. These chairs also offer solid investment appeal. I recently saw them priced at $700 EACH in an upmarket Melbourne store. At this price the investment appeal is a no-brainer! These are the VERY BEST in mid-century modern craftsmanship at a price you won’t see again in other mid-century stores.
These TH Brown & Sons chairs can sell for more than $700 a chair by experienced dealers ($4200 for six)- written 2022. And values for these CONSTANTLY go up- I’ve seen this first hand over the last 20 years. Many modern dining chairs end up at as landfill within years but when sets of vintage chairs look like this after 60 years of use, buyers have full confidence of the quality they’re investing in before they even shell out a cent. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
