Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2013. Some information is be time-sensitive.)

SINCE WRITING THIS DESCRIPTION BACK IN 2013, I’VE DISCOVERED DEGINITIVELY THAT THIS IS AN ALVINO BAGNI PIECE- I’VE DECIDED TO KEEP THE DESCRIPTION AS I WROTE IT BACK IN 2013.

A pottery cat figure made in ITALY with a maker’s mark to verify this- I believe the piece is 1950’s or 1960’s. This is a large piece (30cmHt and wide also). It’s a feature piece and can sit on a sideboard, hall table or side table and become the focal point of the space. It formed part of my own collection for several years- I had it as part of a display in a bare corner. It really bought life to that area and gave the space an arty look. I love it but I have moved house and it’s currently in storage so it’s time for her to find another loving home.

It’s very likely this piece was produced by Alvino Bagni in the 1950’s or 60’s. The small impressed “ITALY” mark on the base is characteristic of many of Bagni’s designs around this time. This mark can be seen in the Mark Hill reference book, “Alla Moda- Italian Ceramics of the 1950’s-70’s”. This is an extremely rare piece and I’ve never come across another in the last 11 years I’ve been in this business. It has been hand-painted artfully with a high degree of expression and skill. This painting draws you in, in a way mass-produced pieces done by machines can’t. The passion and soul of the artist shines through and can be seen in every brush-stroke and paint dimple. It’s obvious a lot of time and talent went into it. The result is a one-off piece of art you’d expect to see in an art gallery with a bigger price tag.

This piece is a lot rarer than virtually every Bitossi piece ever produced and has at least the same degree of handiwork as Bitossi animals. Bitossi cats fetch about $440 in Australia (written in 2013)- due to its rarity I believe this one is worth a decent bit more. With its ITALY impression its heritage is irrefutable. If it is a Bagni piece it’s worth a lot more than this asking price.

The real beauty of owning this vintage piece is knowing it won’t be in vogue for just a season or even a couple of years before ending up in the bin. Because it’s a vintage piece, there’s very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
