Provenance and Background Info
This might well be one of the most comfortable chairs I’ve sat in for some time! In the reclined position, the comfort is out-of-this-world. You are held in perfect seating position but you can recline the chair at any angle to find the exact comfort you’re looking for. In the recline position you’d be able to fall asleep in this chair for your afternoon nap … no problem at all!
I’m not sure of the designer of this one, neither is my vendor and neither were the people she bought it from. This chair has already passed enough hands for the story behind it to be lost. My vendor said that the people before the previous owners said it was American. That’s all we have- and there’s no reason to dispute that. I’ve been selling pre-loved vintage designer furniture for almost 20 years. I source ALL my stock in Australia- I see no need in filling up containers overseas and bringing them in when we have so much amazing furniture in this country. (No need to burn fossil fuels when we don’t have to.) I’ve never come across this design before and if it was Australian I should have. Designs of this callibre don’t pass me by. Even if I have no intention of buying, interesting furniture will always make me stop and take a closer look.
This chair is certainly 1970’s. The frame is the tone all furniture makers were using at that time and the leather is that “tough-as-nails” vintage leather they used in the 1970’s. The quality of this chair is exceptional. This chair has been built to be passed from generation to generation and it already has! The frame is as solid as the day it was made and the leather is in exceptional condition for a chair that has been loved and used for almost 50 years! This is proper FULL-GRAIN VINTAGE LEATHER- if you clean and condition this leather regularly I see no reason why this chair won’t last another 50 years (or more).
The other thing this design has going for it is very SOLID investment appeal. They couldn’t make a chair of this quality for anywhere near this price these days but this chair is nearing 50 years old (I doubt you’ll ever find another one like this again. At this price there’s no reason why this chair shouldn’t continue to increase in value in the future (if you look after it with some sense). This design is timeless, stylish and the reclining feature will appeal to a wide cross-section of the market. It’s inspired by Sigurd Resell’s famous Falcon chair (by Norwegian company, Vatne Mobler) and some of Ingmar Relling’s chair designs (that are also Norwegian). Falcon chairs are currently fetching up to AU $2800 EACH in some vintage Melbourne shops. This chair is just as good in my eyes but listed here at less than HALF the price of a Falcon. (It’s at least as rare as the Falcon chair too- actually to be honest it’s a LOT rarer!)
Like the Falcon chair, this chair also has a canvas sling that’s supported on a curved timber frame. The frame on this one is stronger than a Falcon chair as well (this design- particularly in the seat-area- has a metal sub-structure). This vintage chair reclines as well which I think adds to the appeal of the design- Falcon chairs don’t.
Buying quality vintage furniture is a great way to go. If an Australian (or American) company made these again today, you’d be set back about $3000 per chair but seeing first-hand how something has held up over the years verifies how smart your investment is (before you shell out a cent). I have no doubt this vintage American chair will be passed onto future generations- a symbol that when something has been done well, it will live on. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill, reduce your carbon footprint and support local small business.
This chair is in the same league as Artek, Anibou, Westnofa, Tessa, Parker, FLER and Danish Deluxe pieces.
