Background Info and Provenance

Written in 2022 by the iNVISeDGE regular seller in the GOLD COAST (in conjunction with Michael Grealy)

A unique pair of Bamboo Heart Shaped benches with handwoven cane seats. I’d say these stools are around 100 YEARS OLD. This rare design has never been mass-produced or replicated- it’s highly unlikely you’ll come across anything remotely like them again. Michael was excited when I presented this pair to him and no-one here at iNVISeDGE has ever seen this design before (we have a combined total of about 40 years in the trade). The thing I love most is the practicality on offer. These character-filled pieces have a myriad of potential uses- I can see them used as a Vanity Stool, Bench-seat, Coffee Table, Bed-Side Tables … even a Travel Chair.

These stools are certainly pre-1950- most likely made in the arts and crafts era (or possibly early Art Nouveau era)- Michael thinks they’re most likely an early 1930’s production. They’re lightweight and were intended to be easily carried around, maybe on a short hike for a picnic or cricket match. A lightweight stool made after the 1950’s would most likely have been made from Aluminium- a cheap, lightweight material that lended itself to mass-production.

The previous owner purchased these wonderful stools from an English couple back in the 1980’s . The couple were travelling around Australia at the time. Apparently, they had travelled Europe previously with these stools. I imagine a rather cultured couple travelling around Europe in their old Range Rover, taking these stools out wherever stopping at a scenic spot to set up a little picnic, (perhaps a cup of tea and a pork pie, followed by a tipple of sherry or port). I picture the lady in a flowing summer dress and the gentleman in his sporting attire (even his Sunday best after church!). The mere look of stools conjures up a vision of a time long by.

My research has uncovered only one single Bamboo bench in this design for sale worldwide- its for sale in New York for AU$1,295 on 1stdibs. (See the Screen Shot above). Listed as a “1930s Tribal Bamboo Bench” sadly there is no Provenance information in that listing  so we cannot provide any further information about these but we are sure they have a decent amount of age to them. The construction and design of these benches is exceptional- the hand-crafted quality and elegant flowing shape endows them with an appeal we rarely across. Earthy and inviting in looks, with a fascinating mix of arts and crafts appeal and a designer coolness, it’s highly unlikely you’ll come across anything like these again. They have VERY solid investment appeal to top off a very rare 0pportunity.

The previous owners purchased these second-hand in the early 1980’s- other provenance information has been lost in the passing of hands after they came to find their new home in Australia. This special pair has evaded landfill for well over 50 years and are set to be passed onto new generations, telling new stories as they go. I can’t think of any better way to invest in your home, care for our environment and support local small business.

DURABLE, timeless looks and great comfort- bravo again to quality vintage design!

BOTH benches are in great vintage condition. They are strong and sturdy… NO Damage to the Bamboo, NO unravelling to the woven seat, NO wobbles in any joint area. Being VINTAGE pieces, the bamboo and cane has some markings, scuffs, and signs of ageing. Overall though for something we estimate to be about 80 years old, they present extremely well. These have been well looked after and have never been kept outside. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dimensions.
