An Italian Arper Aston 4-ways swivel chair designed by Jean-Marie Massaud in 2006. This design has been a mainstay at Arper for about 17 years now. These are easily some of the best chairs we’ve had- if not the best. The stylish, dynamic style screams sophistication- the comfort has to be experienced to be believed and the quality is exceptional. These are beautiful settle into- the attention to the ergonomics is spot-on. These chairs envelope you and the touch of the leather is so luxurious too. Plus, the spring mechanism adds an element of tilt for further relaxation. The return mechanism adds further sophistication and appeals to my OCD side (!) When on display, the angle will always be spot-on for these- no need to ever rotate them to get them to display from the best angle.
I think the colour of these is perfect too. The polished aluminium base gives the design a modernist, space-age look; the cognac-coloured leather is warm and earthy, which provides an intriguing contrast. There’s a bit of “pop” to the colour but the colour is still pretty neutral. In black or white, I wouldn’t have liked these chairs half as much. I think red would have been too much as well. This cognac colour allows the stylish shape and sleek flow to take focus, not the colour. Worked in with an earthy colour scheme with timber and sandstone, this chair would give your space a dynamic touch.
The upholstery job is meticulous- I don’t think I’ve ever seen upholstery done in leather on a shaped chair like this done so well. It’s mind-blowing that the upholstery is tight and tidy all over despite the curves and minimalist style of the design. Working with leather, puckering is usually inevitable in several areas of the chair. Somehow with these, this hasn’t happened. They’re at the pinnacle of a tidy, refined style.
These leather Arper Aston chairs retail new overseas for $6,691 AUSTRALIAN dollars EACH as shown in the Screenshot. At our price they’re a no-brainer. I visited a few furniture retailers recently and similar feature chairs retail new for about $8,000 AUSTRALIAN dollars. In BoConcept they have a leather feature chair for over $10,000 but I like this Arper design more. At our price (and if you look after it), I can’t see them ever losing any value. I’d say it would cost Arper significantly more than our price to make them- plus there’s transport from Italy to consider.
These Italian chairs are at the height of luxury, in showroom condition and show inspiring quality. Arper supplies the chairs with a 5-year structural warranty. In Australia, Stylecraft has exclusive rights to retail Arper designs. I’ve never come across this design on the secondary market or even on the Stylecraft website for that matter. I strongly doubt you’ll come across this design on the secondary market again- particularly up in Brisbane. The six we secured came out of an office foyer in Melbourne and show very little signs of use, if any.
These Italian Arper chairs are bound to be passed from this generation to the next. Investing in items that were built to last is our only way out of this mess and the best way to respect our earth and its resources. There are very few better ways to invest in your home or office and reduce landfill.
