(This description was written for the huge 4.5-seater in 2016.)
A HUGE 2.52m (4.5 seater) Arthur G leather sofa with a stunning minimalist design and various Arthur G labels. Arthur G is an Australian boutique furniture manufacturer- the quality of their work is exceptional- in line with King Furniture. This 2.52m sofa retailed for $5800. Arthur G has been in business for 35 years- through the onslaught of cheap furniture coming in from China. How have Arthur G been able to sell a single leather sofa for $5800 and thrive throughout such a turbulent time? The answer is simple. When their product is well-made and stands the test of time people talk and they have. People know that the Arthur G brand is furniture of distinction. How is their work distinctive when the design looks similar to a lot of what’s on the market?
Arthur G furniture is CRAFTED IN AUSTRALIA (a lot of it BY HAND). Workers are treated well, paid well and there are no greenhouse emissions to freight their items in from overseas. Arthur G furniture comes with a 10-year structural guarantee. (This sofa is still under warranty but the previous owners were moving overseas and weren’t able to find the receipt.) Only the very best quality raw materials, coupled with the most exquisite natural leathers are used to craft of each piece. Arthur G uses the highest quality Australian hardwood (solid timber) in the construction of all their frames- this provides the best balance between strength and versatility and complements their robust and durable suspension system. Arthur G use ‘Black Cat’ webbing from Italy in each base construction, and ‘elastobelt webbing’ in the backs (which is often used in commercial furniture). In the sofa on offer in this listing Arthur G has used a mix of ‘Enduro’ foam for support and 50% duck down for luxurious comfort. Nothing has been compromised creating a sofa of the very highest quality and comfort.
This sofa has been saddle-stitched by hand and reinforced to ensure the stitching retains its shape and strength.
What impressed me most though was when I found out about Arthur G’s GECA 2008 Environmental Choice Award and their continued environmental and sustainable work ethic which is maintained throughout all aspects of their design and manufacturing process.
In the end though a sofa like this has to be comfortable to sit in. This sofa is luxurious to relax in with the duck down cushions and the design promotes a casual and relaxed use- perfect for watching TV and movies. The seat section is generous allowing space to put your feet up under you.
This sofa is about 6-7 years old and presents extremely well- testament to the quality on offer. This is a huge piece and anything remotely similar in looks will cost you at least $1800 even from a “bargain basement” store. Those shops do NOT provide a 10-year guarantee, do NOT win awards for environmental sustainability, do use NOT “proper leather” and certainly do NOT make their sofas in Australia where workers are treated fairly. There are NO crosses here and NO comparison to the mass-produced stuff coming in from overseas. Here you can be as environmentally and socially-conscious as possible but not need to pay the $5800 boutique price tag!
This sofa has been used for 6-7 years which gives irrefutable evidence of the quality on offer. Lounges don’t look like this after 6-7 years use unless the quality is there. Cheap “leathers” WILL start to disintegrate with years (I’ve been dealing in vintage furniture long enough to know this)- this leather presents very well and is still soft, supple and luxurious. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill and your carbon footprint.
